Okay..for those of you who (like me) are broke; Or just for those of you who are cheap!!! Here's some ideas for inexpensive, but tasty foods.
That's right, you don't need to live on Chef Boy R D or Kraft dinner to save $$$.

Roasted root vegtables:
2 white potatoes
1 sweet potato
1/2 onion
1 big clove of garlic
--cut all that stuff up into bit sized peices (mince the garlic)
--put it in a roasting pan
spirnkle with dried spices..
Rosemary
Basil
Thyme
--pour some olive oil (or vegtable oil)
--cook for a little more than a half an hour at about 425 degrees.
--let it sit for a few minutes
For a real treat grate some cheese (any kind) on it after it comes out of the oven.


Noodles and Vegtables (for the kids)
Instead of Hot dogs and Kraft Dinner, this is cheaper and much healthier.
--1/3 cup (per child) dried noodles (you can get about three to four times as much dried maccaroni noodles if you buy bulk for the same price as a box of KD)
--Some cut up brocolli (about 5 peices per child)
--frozen peas and corn (little les than 1/4 cup per child)

-Boil water / add noodles / add brocolli after 3 minutes / add peasaand corn 3 minutes after that / drain 3 minutes after that. mix with some butter and cheese.


Special Ittalian type meal for two.
-okay, this one may be a bit more pricey for some of you..where I live, I can get Atlantic Salmon really cheap-if you can't get that-Buy one chicken breast.
First-make some garlic oil
Basically boil 2 cloves of minced garlic in 1/3 cup of olive (or vegtable) oil.
Next-start boiling some water for spagetti noodles.
Cut up some assparagus, half an onion, and about 3 ounces of Atlantic Salmon.
Add the noodles to the water
Fry up the Assparagus, salmon, and onion in a half-table spoon of the Garlic oil, mixed with a half-table spoon of butter.
When noodles are cooked, drain, and toss with assparagus/salmon mixture, and the rest of the oil.

Sorry these aren't written out better, but they've all come off the top of my head (mostly I'm just guessing the measurements!)
But these meals are quite inexpensive--Most people already have most of the ingrediants home already, and the ones ou may need to buy are not expensive..

Corn Chowder

2 cans of creme of potato soup (80 cents each)
1 can whole potatoes (60 cents)
2 cans whole corn (50 cents each)

open creme of potato soup, add one can of either water or milk per can (I use milk) simmer, do not boil if using milk, you will curdle the milk.

in seperate pan, open potatoes (cut if you like) and two cans of corn. heat to boiling.

add 2nd pan with potatoes/corn into simmering pot.

add pepper to taste.

serve with bread (of any sort) or crackers.

enjoy with loved one or friend on a cold/rainy day.

I guess dennis and I are the only members who aren't millioneres.

But just in case, here's a recipe for a cheap, easy and tasty tomato sauce:

1 750ml can of tomatoes.
1 chopped carrot
1 chopped onion

Throw all that in a pot, add
1 pinch of sugar
1 tablespoon of basil

Bring to boil, simmer for 45 mins.
Throw into a food processer
Toss with your favorite cooked pasta-noodles.

easy quick pasta recipes.

you can find generic pasta pretty cheap. maybe 2 for $1.00, or such.

i'm a vegeterian, but will use meat for these.
check your reduced meat, good bargains, but use the meat within a day or two of getting it.

onions, mushrooms (the canned mushrooms are cheaper) and one of the following...

tomato sauce(use drew's recipe)
creme of mushroom soup/creme of celery soup (a can or two of each, use generic)
beef gravy (the packets are cheap)
a cheese sauce (again, find a packet)

boil pasta,
in frying pan sautee your onions, mushrooms, green peppers (the cheapest of the colors), after cooked set aside and cook your meat. you can use hamburger, turkey, sausage, chicken. shop around, check that reduced meat bin. when meat is 98% done, add veggies back in. add sauce.

One Dish Chicken/Rice Bake (very easy & good)

Note:this recipe calls for a 10 3/4 ounce can of cream of mushroom soup. You can actually use any cream soup. We have used all kinds, and our favorites are cream of potato and cream of broccoli! Asparagus isn't bad, either.

I can (10 3/4 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
1 1/2 cups of water
1 cup uncooked regular white rice
paprika to taste
pepper to taste
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In 2 quart shallow baking dish mix soup, water, rice, paprika, and pepper. Place chicken breasts on top of rice mixture. Sprinkle them with a bit more pepper and paprika. Cover the dish.
Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until done (we've never had a problem with it not being done in 45 minutes, BTW).
Eat!!

***A note on Dutchess's recipe..to save money, buy full chicken breasts, and de-bone and de-skin them yourself..It's amazing that you pay more for less stuff!!!

today bought hot dog buns for my soy dogs (will have them at work for lunch tomorrow). generic dog rolls I bought = 78 cents. Sunbeam dog rolls = $1.78. wow, what a gouge, for a name. see if there is a bread store near you. great prices for bread and baked goods.

I consume Wal-Mart's Sams Choice diet cola by the gallons-a 2 liter bottle is 52 cents and I must say I like it better than either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi.Oh yea and dry beans and rice-cheap,tasty,and good for you.

A local grocery is having 69 cents a dozen on eggs.
And also 69 cents for a half-pound of cheese! (only 1 pkg per customer, though)

Hopefully I'll get those today.

Boil a chicken leg.
Discard bones, skin, fat etc. Strain broth.
Bring broth to boil.
Break up a package of ramen noodles.
Add ramen noodles and 1 egg to boiling broth or water.
Break chicken leg meat up into small pieces.
Cook noodles to desired consistency.
Strain.
Add 1/2 package of the seasoning and the chicken.
Mix.
Eat.
