Alright, not Fantasy (chior ahs), really, but good nevertheless.
First book, the Skystone, and it involves Romans. Yes. I said Romans.
It's an excellent series. At about the third book I realised that they were talking about King Arthur and all that nonsense.
Point being, has anyone but me heard of this guy?

Whyte's Camulod Chronicles (also known as A Dream of Eagles in Canada) may well be the most realistic interpretation of the King Arthur legend ever.
No magic or wizardry in this version. It deals with Rome pulling out of Britain and certain Roman soldiers' attempts to keep the light of civilization burning while throwing back the Saxon invasion. Whyte's detail is amazing . . . but you won't see Merlin until volume 3 and Arthur until volume 4. The series starts with Arthur's grandparents!!
So I would call them historical adventure, rather than fantasy.
Excellent by any genre name.

Oops! After reading Roland's post, I realized these were not the books I had been thinking about.
I was thinking of a couple that occur in our time where the Roman Empire never fell and I can't for the life of me remember the titles or the author. Anyway, my bad!
