Greatest Historical Epic. (swords, spears and muskets)

Historical epics are plentiful. They are generally large in scope and the stories (though embellished for drama) center around one momentous event or period in history. Most films of this nature are by definition a thrilling spectacle. There are many eras that fall into this category but I tend to think of ancient Rome the most. Three immediately come to mind.

Spartacus
Highlander
Gladiator
Ben-Hur

But there are other locations, other eras to consider……thoughts?

Troy's looking pretty good, though the line between historic and mythic is rather blurred. I didn't see any gods in the previews, though, so I'm thinking it will be more historic (though, of course, many would argue that Braveheart was almost as mythic as it was historic).

Though I've never been a Civil War buff, I try watching Gettysburg (1993) at least every couple of years.

Man, I can't WAIT for Troy!! I imagine they show the same preview everywhere, and I didn't see gods either. It would be great without them!

The previews for Troy do look good, but previews can make a lot of things look good...I hope its what its being made out to be!
Braveheart and Gladiator would both have to be up there for me...
I have never seen Glory or The Seven Samurai and have heard both are very good, as well.

I liked the old movie The Vikings with Kirk Douglass and Sidney Poitier-"the mare of steel" rocked! And the remake of The Four Feathers was pretty darn good 2, Lawrence of Arabia not bad either...

An historic movie I have always loved, but am not sure if it set far enough back in time to count, would be Doctor Zhivago...I would agree with Saving Private Ryan, and would add Schindler's List if we are allowed to have movies set closer to us in time on the list...

I remember trying to watch that once. A film so bad there are supposedly scenes on the beach where you can see modern hotels in the background.
