If you're contemplating suicide, but can't decide.....
.....watch "The Notebook." This chick flick is guaranteed to make you want to slit your wrists.
Seriously....it's a pretty good story and movie. But guys, just be prepared with plenty of Kleenex for your wives/girlfriends, and also have an answer for the following question ready at a moment's notice: Why don't you love me like that?

Definately a chick flick, when I put it in the DVD player, Russ runs as fast as he can out of the room.
But, that's what I do when he puts in something like Die Hard or the Godfather. hehehe

That's because you're a guy, and guys like the Godfather.
Me, I don't find murder and violence entertaining. Give me my chick flicks over that stuff any day

Sorry, but somebody just compared the Godfather and chick flicks. That's like comparing the Mona Lisa with nachos and cheese.
I'll personally never understand how people let things like violence stop them from witnessing great art. Oh well, it's their loss. Shakespeare had its share of violence, and the Godfather is just a Shakespearean saga for the modern-day.
It is not a "guy flick" or any such flavor of the month movie in any sense. Just one look at the movie's direction, characters, cinematography, storytelling, script, and so on will tell you it's more than just entertainment. It's ART. Any student of film is seriously depriving his or herself if they never see it.

Actually, although we weren't really doing either, we were coming closer to contrasting than comparing. But you're right about all the rest.
And Godfather talk is definitely the best part of You've Got Mail, or whatever that Hanks/Ryan movie is called. Which is a chick flick, though not one of the very best.

I love You've Got Mail
And David, sorry, but I don't like the Godfather or any mafia movie just for that reason...Mafia. It glorifies one of the most heinous organized crime sects in history. Personally, such things don't entertain me. Sorry. But that is just me. It may very well be art, but it's not art I like.
I'll take Philidelphia, Ghost, Forest Gump, The Notebook, Sleepless in Seattle, Finding Neverland, Meet the Flockers, Funny Girl...etc over it any day.

The art of the Godfather is not in its aspects of mafia or violence; it’d be a surface judgment to say so. The movie’s focus transcends glorifying crime; moreover, its focus is aimed directly at a very human story about a man who becomes what he dreads by protecting his family. It's also about how our family's decisions in the past very much affect us before we’re born, and they affect our choices in the future. It’s also a great statement on the evils of politics and capitalism, as well.Furls Fire wrote:And David, sorry, but I don't like the Godfather or any mafia movie just for that reason...Mafia. And so much more. So many moments of the movie gives me chills ("I'm your older brother, Mike, and I was stepped over!"), and, in one case, tears.
It's unfortunate that we can't share such joy over a movie, but I understand that it bothers you, and I'll let it drop. Forgive me, for The Godfather is a passionate subject of mine.
And "Meet the Fockers" glorifies scatological humor.Furls Fire wrote:It glorifies one of the most heinous organized crime sects in history.

LOL!!! That it does...but it's so darn funny.
Our tastes differ, that's all. The Godfather touches you deeply, just like Philidelphia touches me deeply, for reasons that are our own. Each is it's own statement. Art has many forms, not every form speaks the same to every one. Philidelphia will always always be my favorite movie, because it hits nerves in me that not all have or even want to have. As the Godfather does you.
Mafia or AIDS...both are diseases this world could live without.
And The Notebook...well, such sweet love should never be taken for granted. That movie, and book, glorifies deep love, and that is something we could all use a little more of.
