anyone ever hear about a movie project?

Post by terrycloth boogieboarder »

Hello all, my first time on the site here and it's totally a great find!!!

I have a friend in the Computer gaming industry, in development, that has worked on several movie tie-in games. Often he is asked to research and consider possibilities for games long before movie production even commences. He was recently asked to look into the SRD "Covenant Chronicles" for this very purpose.

Nothing definite he says as he has done this on occasion before for other subject matter w/ no movie as an end result. He remembered I was very fond of the work and called me to let me in on the "inside scoop".

I was wondering if anyone has heard or come across any other information about a proposed film.

In my opinion I believe it would be an even more difficult undertaking than "The Lord of The Rings" but if done as well as that film I would be impressed.

I am always hopeful that a movie (or series of movies or even a TV series) might be made of TCTC, but I've not heard anything about a movie being made. :(

"At one time."
"What happened to her?"
"She has been dead."
"How long ago did she die?"
"Two thousand years."

I agree Terrycloth .. I would also be impressed .. LotR's was excellently done ..

.. on this forum a lot of conjecture about the merits or no of TCTC being made into a movie .. but I have not heard of an actual movie even being considered in the pipeline .. exciting stuff tho' ..

It would be one of the rare times that I would step inside a theater. If such a project was under consideration, I believe that someone would have heard about it and reported it on this forum at sometime. After all, in the movie industry secrets are pretty darned hard to keep.

TCTC/LOTR

Post by danlo »

I just heard that a box set of LOTR/Fellowship is now available and it's 6 hrs long including all the scenes they didn't use in the movie. They would def have 2 do the same thing if a movie version of LFB was done. I can c all 3 books in the 1st Chrons & (2 some xtent WGW) made in2 movies but TWL & TOT would take a herculian effort. I have not heard a peep about a movie-I do check A Song of Ice and Fire's website @ least 2xs a week--w/over 1500 members-if there's even a whisper about a TCTC movie (or any movie) it would b posted there. But, as we saw from the 3rd Chrons rumors over there, we def need 2 check and verify everything @ least twice!

dear danlo, it must be a hoax, the Collector's Edition of FotR is coming out in November and it contains only 30 minutes plus footage, so the 6-hours movie ssems a bit unlikely
but if you can post a link I'll be most happy

as for a PC game, I think the Gap would be a better choice here; I always thought the Asteroid Belt with its thousands of explorable asteroids, space stations, orehaulers, pirates and cops could be an ideal setting for an Elite-like game, plus you have the Amnion to fight

which does not mean that I would not love to see TCTC as a PC game...

and I also think that the Gap could be a very good material for a deep, strong TV series (the thinking man's Star Trek:-)), as it mostly takes place in spaceship interiors and space stations...

but this is OT here, sorry

Aparrently according to the interview with Donaldson, a movie has been attmpted before, but has fallen through. So I'm not counting on it.

Movie attempt

Post by shrike »

When was this attempted? And how far did they get?

It would make a great movie (or maybe even better as a TV series), but they'd have to do something with the formal language, it'd be hard to watch, and face it, hard for the actors to deliver well.

from what little I have heard--I think SRD states (in some interview) that some1 bought the rights from him and quickly gave up...I'm not sure if it was revealved who the party was and the rights may b back up 4 grabs...I think he said, in the same interview, that the only choice he could concieve 2 play TC would b Anthony Hopkins, but as a younger man..

It should be stated that whenever a film does well at the box office, the production companies sit up and take notice. For instance, with Spiderman's success, alot of work is being started on other superhero films (another Batman film, Superman, etc). It's not unreasonable to assume that a Covenant film (or TV series) will be made, due to LOTR's success. Further, I imagine a studio would endeavour to make a Covenant film because it has something more to offer than the usual fantasy - that is, it's an intellectual fantasy, and critics would like that. Alot of people would be turned off by TC himself (as I hear when people say why they dont like the books), so I wouldnt be surprised if the film did badly. But knowing hollywood, they'd cut out alot (eg, Lena's rape).

Indeed. I can't help thinking the Hollywood studios would probably cut all the controversial bits - the bits that lift TCTC above your average fantasy fare. I also can't really see how they could express all the internal struggles that occur within various characters in the Chronicles.

But I think if a film or series was made of the Chronicles, I'd have to watch it, if for no other reason than to whinge about it here :)

I think it's likely that they'll make movies of some other fantasies before they'd do TCTC. I don't mean to offend anyone, but as far as I'm concerned most fantasy is shite. I can't believe the turgid nonsense they print these days, and the Covenant books are relatively unknown.

TC "relatively unknown"?

Post by aliantha »

The Chrons may be relatively unknown now, but they were bestsellers when they were first published.

As for the dialogue: Most all of the "big words" are in the narrative. It might actually be kinda fun to hear just the dialogue -- the Land's more formal speech patterns against TC's sarcasm. Tho I still say that it would be difficult to do the Chrons justice onscreen, because (as somebody else here observed) so much of the action happens in the characters' heads.

As for the possibility of the rape scene being cut: That's the LAST thing they'll cut. It's sex, for crying out loud -- the lifeblood of Hollywood! In fact, it's sex and violence. All we need is rock & roll! Naw, the rape scene stays. Tastefully done, of course.... 8O

If the Chronicles ever find their way to the big screen, I want to see Christopher Nolan sitting in the director's chair. He's the exceedingly talented fellow who made "Memento" and "Insomnia", both of which focused on tortured souls not too terribly unlike Thomas Covenant. And Guy Pearce, who starred in "Memento", would make a fantastic Covenant. I hope to see it happen one day, but I'm not holding my breath...

what

Post by saltheart foamfollower123 »

I havent replied in awile, but if you forgot, im the cool, writing thirteen year old!
anyway, i somewhat agree with the editing part
I would love to see the chrons on the scrreen, though there would have to be some big changes, and that bothers me. I mean, if they take out something, even something littte, it could effect the series. Lets take something small--not having pieten in LFB. whats the effect??? the ramen dont get killed off as much...
lena dosent die! then what would the screen writers think up? that she actually becomes his "queen" and lives happily ever after?
(personally, i found the lena subject very very touchy and felt it was realy important to the story.I loved to read about lena after LFB and was realived when the end happened... for some reason, the quote "and finally, her eyes finally became clear for the first time in years" was so so so so powerful.)(and then she died.. )
but back to the subject!
now, howbout they butcher the lena idea completely. He dont rape no one.
then the point of the paradox of the poem of white gold and covenant would either not be true or not as strong and faint
because he is powerful and weak;
wise and ignorant;
mad and sane
something and something,
:?
(that by the way was very poiwerful, which makes srd one of most treasured idols)
i guess it w ould be good if they took some parts out like lena so if i see the movie my mother wouldnt get mad at me for seein or readin a movie with
violence
adult language
distoting leprocy views
nudity
graphic violence
aduilt content
(I have to act thirteen sometimes!!!)
but i would love to see the movie the same reason people loved to see lotr when they read the book.
but i heard in an interview that srd wont likely write a screen write because thats not how he writes.
it would be cool to see the movie so when people say "that movie was so awesome"
i coul.d say "yea, but you see, i have a better opinion because ive seen the movie and READ THE BOOK!"
so beat that!
and that way I could get popular along with braging rights...

Obviously, whoever made the movie would have to fall in love with the story just as we all have. That would be the only way to do justice to the books.
The King has one more move.
