fetid vesicular lophophore
The little rogue crouched damply at the base of the banyan, among the fetid grass at the marge of the swamp. Much care was needed, for each diseased and bloated blade of ironweed grass held tiny little vesicular pockets of marsh-gas, which would spark brightly if ruptured by a clumsy foot. So intent on the dangers of the marsh grass, the rogue did not see the glistening of the slime-creature's lophophore as it seeped down from a low-hanging branch...

Homer: I call the big one Bitey!

But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
Full of the heavens and time.

Yo MAMA on the EARTH holding a three bowls of chocolate pudding and four hundred bananas to mix it in with, and twelve spoons to eat it with.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want
to test a man's character, give him power.
--Abraham Lincoln
Excerpt from Animal Songs Never Written
"Hey, dad," croaked the vulture, "what are you eating?"
"Carrion, my wayward son."
"Will there be pieces when you are done?"

To first involve a reader in a story, the writing needs to be not only vivid, as your first paragraphs are, but short enough for the eye to seize a whole sentence all at once and move quickly on. Once the reader has developed momentum, varying the length and structure of sentences is also necessary to keep the prose alive. Brevity is frequently a virtue.

In a Night Gallery parody, Bart presents three tales of terror... In “The Devil and Homer Simpson,” Homer gives up his soul for a single doughnut. Now, the Devil wants Homer. Next, Bart has a nightmare about a bus crash. And his nightmare is about to come true when a playful gremlin starts taking the bus apart piece by piece “Terror at 5 1/2 Feet”. Finally, Mr. Burns is a vampire, and he wants blood, and he turns Bart into a vampire in “Bart Simpson's Dracula.”

Well, I picked the issues up (along with the Scurvy Dogs trade), and I really enjoy it. Not as much as JLA Classified (which is the DC equivalent, as far as I can tell), but Monkey Joe and the two pages of rejections are hysterical. It's still pretty depressing. Overall, I like the art and writing and I think I'll buy the rest of the issues.
