But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
Full of the heavens and time.

I've read 1-10, 14-18, and 20......11-13 are short stories, right? And 19, 21, 22 & 23 are co-written by McCaffrey, IIRC.

Nice! I'd love to read that when you get it up on the site.Ainulindale wrote:Encryptic, I jsut got a response back from Ms. Wells, and I just wanted to let you know she has granted my site a upcoming interviewHope you enjoy it. For what it's worth, I was turned on to Death of the Necromancer by an old "Best of Sci-Fi/Fantasy" list on SFSite.com that I was poking through in search of more prospects to check out.

I just started reading Element of Fire last night, as a matter of fact.
On another note: I tried to get into Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell but after about 250 pages, I just couldn't feel compelled to go on. It's not a bad book, but there was just something missing. Maybe I'll give it another shot at a later date and see if my opinion changes.
Not to mention, her style of putting footnotes on practically every page got really irritating after a while. Footnotes are fine when I'm reading a non-fiction book, but they just distracted from the main plot here.

Interesting. What's this mystery he's co-writing?gyrehead wrote:While rough, I enjoyed the Initiate Brother much more than the River Into Darkness series. But I read Russell as he came out so that might have had something to do with it.Encryptic wrote:That said, it's good to see someone else actually reading his stuff on KW. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one besides SRD who had actually heard of this guy.
If you enjoy the Swans War, I'd also recommend checking out his River Into Darkness duology (Beneath the Vaulted Hills and The Compass of the Soul). No connection to Swans War, but still a great read if you like his style.
He's also written a couple of other duologies (Moontide and Magic Rise, The Initiate Brother), but I didn't find them as good as the rest of his stuff.
I really disliked his mystery that he is co-writing and hope he is hard at work on a new fantasy project, though he updates his website even worse than Tor does theirs.
I said this in the Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell thread but noone there agreed with me, now i have another member in the 'CLIQUE AGAINST FOOTNOTES CLIQUE'Not to mention, her style of putting footnotes on practically every page got really irritating after a while. Footnotes are fine when I'm reading a non-fiction book, but they just distracted from the main plot here.

I would urge you to continue though

Defintely agree with Warmark, the first portion of this novel is the portion that seems to universally give problems to readers. I didn't think it was that prevalent, but won't deny it's existance, however even considering that, IMHO the best novel of 2004.

Yeah, I'll probably pick it up later on. I have this really stubborn habit of refusing to give up on a book if I read some of it and there *was* some redeeming quality to it. I may not finish it the first time, but I just *have* to come back to it later and try it again. Sometimes it takes me a bit to get used to the style, or the book started out slow, etc.Warmark wrote:I said this in the Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell thread but noone there agreed with me, now i have another member in the 'CLIQUE AGAINST FOOTNOTES CLIQUE'Not to mention, her style of putting footnotes on practically every page got really irritating after a while. This has happened with quite a few books that have since then become personal favorites of mine (Covenant, Book of the New Sun, etc.).

Just about everything that I have read, that I am reading, and that I intend to read are now found here.
But I'll still be posting here to say what I think of them.

Right now I'm reading two book...Order of the Phoenix (HArry Potter) and the Hobbit.
This is my first time trough the HP books.
I'm reading the Hobbit to my five year old--about a chapter a night (Except the really long chapters-lilke Queer Lodgings--took us two nights)

Perdido Street Station by Mieville.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I skipped that chapter when reading it to my kids. I want them to be adults before I have to tell them about San Francisco.....drew wrote:I'm reading the Hobbit to my five year old--about a chapter a night (Except the really long chapters-lilke Queer Lodgings--took us two nights)
