Demondim connected and wielding the Illearth Stone concept

Post by High Lord Tolkien »

Demondim connected and wielding the Illearth Stone concept.

Anyone else find this a cheap excuse on SRD's part to bring back the Illearth Stone?

And how is it working again?
The Demondim were brought through a caesure to the time that Anele lost the Staff, then they went through *another* caesure that brought Linden's party back to the present.
And *still* somehow the Demondim remain connected to the Illearth Stone after TWO caesure transfers?
And both caesures are now GONE but they are still tapping into it?
The same Illearth Stone that was only a rumor of and buried deep in LFB?
And somehow the Demondim are hell bent on destroying Linden at first and then they moved away towards Covenant and Jerry?
What is the goal of the Demondim?
And somehow Esmer manipulated a caesure to bring the Demondim forward in time?
But Esmer can't summon a caesure just use an existing one?
Seems like he's whipping these things around pretty easily.

I know, "WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK!"
Arrgghh.......!

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I figure that Esmer rpobebly helped them find Linden and Co.--he probebly also had a hand in bringing the power if the Illearth Stone to th pressent...

You know Esmer really is a jerk after all!!

Cool Edgetar Drew!
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

It is said that the Demonim are manipulating a caesure to use the Stone - and it is not said that the caesure which brought them to Anele's time is gone. I think it likely that this is the caesure they are using. They were supposedly taken away from just before the Ritual of Desecration, before the Illearth Stone was destroyed - perhaps they sensed a caesure and used it to escape said Ritual, just as the Ur-Viles used one to travel to the future. Esmer then simply found the caesure and caused it to deposit the Demondim in the right place at the right time.
If the Ur-Viles and Demondim can manipulate caesures, I see no reason why Esmer cannot.

It does seem kind of lame, bringing back the Illearth Stone... I s'poze Mr. Donaldson must have a good reason for picking that particular object. Ya' know, it factors into the story a certain way (I hope).

Think back to how the Haruchai met their first defeat... from the Stone. Will they prove equally insufficient this time? Or will they triumph over its Corruption?

You'da thought that, being regenerating loremaster Demondim with an Illearth Stone, Linden and co. would be a smear on a rock in short order. Somehow, some tired ur-viles and sick waynhim hold them off. It doesn't make sense from a story-telling perspective. But I said all that once before, here.

Amazing!
How on earth did I miss that thread?
You even followed up with a Benny Hill theme song link!
Excellent post Wayfriend.
That's pretty much what I was trying to say but unfortunately I'm a moron so it didn't flow quite as well as your post did.

But I still think that there is a chance that the ur-Viles would be MORE powerful than the Demondim (minus the Illearth Stone).
It seems to me that the whole creation process starting with the Viles on down was to improve upon the next batch.
What with all their "self hate" and all.
Like we saw with Vain killing the ur-Viles from a distance.
That was a power that was beyond the ur-Viles to counter directly.
Sure, they could still destroy him but he was the greater creation.

I seems like SRD is bringing everything back for the finale, I don't doubt that the Krill and Orcrest etc. will appear and the lore of wood and stone (including I hope melding) will be seen again. We will have a tableaux with all the objects of power present including two white gold rings and I'd guess all the key characters playing some part against a new menace.

The Illearth stone or its fragments will also serve to highlight the fallability of the Haruchai in a confrontational way (as if there is any other way with the Haruchai). This appears to be in the theme already with the maimed Haruchai being a link to this past.

As for the original question of HLT, one of the reasons I enjoy and read SRD, is because he is consistent in his application of law/lore. I hate tales that do a Trek DS9, find some solution in a previously untold aspect of yet to be science or magic lore, applied through Tachyon beams or suddenly awakened powers. Laws within the fantasy universe must be consistent to really make them believable. I don't mind dragons, elves, giants, demondim, whatever, as long as they remain consistent within the governance of their own laws.

SRD does take a lawyers view and push some of these laws, but even in breaking them, the Lore of the Law ( or vice versa), remains consistent.

That being the case, I believe that caesures will have some sort of physical Laws and some magical Lores that will govern them. These will be revealed as being entirely consistent with the Land and the universe it inhabits.

I noticed HLT that you refer to Jeremiah as Jerry, I hope you don't go on to refer to Covenant as Tom :-)

including I hope melding
What I don't get, is why TC didn't explain melding to Linden. Her whole hang-up about her using "possession" would probably have been avoided, as the description of what she did to/with? Covenant certainly came alot closer to my concept of a meld than a raver-like possession.
