How much do you know about the Bible *debate*

Post by [Syl] »

It's been too quiet here, lately.

www.ffrf.org/quiz/bquiz.php
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Presumably the quiz is desgined to trip up those who answer from their personal beliefs rather than from knowledge of the biblical text. I tried to avoid falling into that trap, but scored pretty dismally in any case: 22/50.

...I failed. The only one I got rite was the one about," He so everest applys the literal to these words is an empty vessel entering the donkey."..or was it,," Surely, he that inhales the one of rope and poppy will be stoned to death.."..?.......MEL

Presumably so, Murrin, but it's also important to note that it is found on the Freedom From Religion site...

Yes, I noticed the severe anti-religion bias, but thought it too obvious to mention, heh.

Got a high C with a 29. One more right answer and I would have gotten a B.

As to the obvious bias - considering it's on the 'Freedom from Religion Foundation' website: big surprise... not.

Answer: C
Repel chariots of iron. So much for omnipotence
 :haha:

Syl-
Than you so much for posting this link. This stuff is hysterical! Makes me glad I'm not Christian. I don't believe I ever read about this much violence, mass murder, stoning to death, and so forth in all Pagan mythology combined (actually, except for an occasional Druidic sacrifice, I never read about any of it) Geez- and they call us evil....

How disappointing, that you would judge Christianity by a bunch of out-of-context quotes and extremely tenuous extrapolations posted on an anti-Christian website.

Kymbierlee,

I agree with what Edge has said.

(Most) Christians do not base their faith upon the mythology cited in this quiz. Also, if you're glad you're not a Christian because of this () - please do not hesitate to expand your generalization to Jewish people as well, who also follow our Old Testament.

Well, that's a good thing, but many Christians certainly don't hesitate to cite this book when it suits their purposes "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" comes to mind. Actually, I am glad I'm not Jewish also. I was glad I'm Pagan before I read this, and what I posted was at least mostly in jest.

I hardly base my judgement of Christianity entirely on these quotes. I made up my mind that the religion is practiced hypocritically a long time ago and left it behind. Also, how do you take some of those quotes out of context?

"Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." (I Corinthians 14:34-35) "I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." (I Corinthians 11:3) "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord." (Colossians 3:18) "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." (I Timothy 2:11-15)

Pretty hard to misinterpret this one. Or this one:

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the Lord by thy estimation. And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels." (Leviticus 27:1-7)

Or this one for crying out loud:

"And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them." (II Kings 2:23-24)

A lot of the Bible teaches a good path, a lot teaches jealousy, anger and vengence.

I wasn't saying all Christians follow the Bible to the letter of the law, but it is the book the religion is based on.

Actually, after re-reading my original post, I think I may have come across as a bit harsh. That does not reflect well on my religion, or on me. I do apologize to anyone I offended.

Got 15 correct. I think that's about right, since I stopped going to church around, oh, 1996? Oh well, I am going to eventually read the whole Bible. Right after I finish the Divine Comedy, that is. And the Iliad.

Kymbierlee,

Fair points, I admit. The Old Testament, yes even the New Testament, is filled with such laws and stories. But...what exactly is your point? Much of it reflects ancient Near Eastern culture, and while fundamentalists may cite certain Biblical passages - condemning witches, gays, etc. - that is an example of taking the Bible out of its cultural and historical context and using it for a purpose that Christ would not have wanted us to use it for.

True, but some do still take much of it at the letter. I agree that it isn't all or even most; hence my apology.

I recall a wonderful line about "All in the Family", where Mike said something like, "I've got nothing against Christianity; heck, I respect it. It's just another way to help people reach love and understanding." Of course, people use Christianity for bad things, too, but that doesn't really tell the whole story, does it? Christianity, if anything, is a many-faceted diamond, with lots of different aspects. I don't feel "glad" that I'm not a Christian; rather, I feel glad that I know a lot of good Christians. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is I think the good outweighs the bad. I'd say 80 to 90% of KW is composed of Christians, and they’re among the best folks I've had the pleasure of knowing. Except Zeph.

Point well taken, LF. The same can be said for most major religions, however.

Sorry, but could you clarify that? Sure, other religions share a lot of the same properties, but I don't think that diminishes them.
