Favorite Lyrics Discussion
Ok, maybe it's just me, but %95 of the time I read Favorite Lyrics, I scan the title and author then maybe a couple of lines. I mean, look at the thread. It's a behemoth at almost 30 pages long, and despite the personal meaning behind it to us, it has about as much content as the average Mallory's thread.
However, VS's recent post made me stop and think. What point are we trying to get across? What's the signifigance to us? What is great or interesting about the song. These are the things I want to know.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Well, I guess I'll go first. In the Favourite Lyrics thread variol son wrote:These are the words to Union, a new song by the Black Eyed Peas. I thought that Furls and Fist especially would like it.
Oh, it is sung to the tune of Englishman in New York, roughly (it is rap after all).
[Chorus]
[One for all, one for all]
[It’s all it’s all for one]
Let’s start a union, calling every human
It’s one for all and all for one
Let’s live in unison, calling every citizen
It’s one for all and all for one
We don’t want war- can’t take no more
It’s drastic time for sure
We need an antidote and a cure
Coz do you really think Mohammed got a problem with your whole world
We don’t want war – imagine if any prophet was alive
In current days amongst you and I
You think they’d view life like you and I do
Or would they sit and contemplate on why
Do we live this way, act and behave this way
We still livin' primitive today
Coz the peace in the destination of war can’t be the way
There’s no way, so people just be ’em wanna be a man
Realise that you can’t change the world by changing yourself
And understand that we’re all just the same
So when I count to three let’s change
[Chorus]
Got no time for grand philosophy
I barely keep my head above the tide
I got this mortgage, got three kids at school
What you’re saying is the truth, but really troubles me inside
I’d change the world if I could change my mind
If I could live beyond my fears
Exchanging unity for all my insecurity
Exchanging laughter for my tears
[Chorus]
I don’t know, y’all, we in a real deposition
In the midst of all this negative condition
Divided by beliefs, different sink and religion
Why do we keep missing the point in our mission?
Why do we keep killing each other, what’s the reason?
God made us all equal in his vision
I wish that I could make music as a religion
Then we could harmonise together in this mission
Listen, I know it’s really hard to make changes
But two of us could help rearrange this curse
Utilising all the power in our voices
Together we will unite and make the right choice
And fight for education, save the next generation
Come together as one
I don’t understand why it’s never been done
So let’s change on the count of one
It takes one, just one
And then one follows the other one
And then another follows the other one
Next thing you know you got a billion
People doing some wonderful things
People doing some powerful things
Let’s change and do some powerful things
Unity could be a wonderful thing

The reason I liked this song was it's basic message; that we want to live in a peaceful world. A world without hate or war. A world that isn't toen apart by disunity, religious or otherwise, where spirituality is about love, not about the difference that seperates us all.
To see this dream realized each person will need to change, and that one by one, as people start doing wonderful and powerful things, then others will see them and also start doing wonderful and powerful things, and so that world will change for the better.
However, the reason I love this song is the second verse:
This to me shows that the writer has enough realism to see the truth; that pretty words are all very well when written on a page or put to music, but that the reality of doing "wonderful" things isn't so easy given the rigours of everyday life.Got no time for grand philosophy
I barely keep my head above the tide
I got this mortgage, got three kids at school
What you’re saying is the truth, but really troubles me inside
I’d change the world if I could change my mind
If I could live beyond my fears
Exchanging unity for all my insecurity
Exchanging laughter for my tears
Because the thing is, I believe that the most wonderful things, the most powerful things, that people do, are not the big public events, surrounded with hype. The truly powerful things that people do aren't the ones that involve vast sums of money.
No, when everyday people like you and I rise above our insecurities and wipe away our tears, and in spite of all our worries about the kids or the mortgage or whatever, we impart a little nit of light, or warmth, or love, into the lives of others.

Holding the door for someone at work. Saying hi to the person that waits with you at the bus stop almost every morning. Complimenting the girl who serves you your afternoon coffee on her new haircut. Just smiling at someone who looks like they need to see a friendly face.
That's why I think these lyrics are so great; they recognize the way our lives are, and then encourage us to do whatever we can, however small, to change the world for the better anyway.

Oh dear. I sound like the type of person who writes introductions for Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

Sum sui generis

I'm not going to write an essay on this, since I just woke up, but here's my take on my second-favorite song:
When Brooker gets to the chorus (the last two lines), it gives me a feeling of "eternity"--best I can describe the sensation. There's some kind of timeless summation of my life hidden in those lines, and it's hard to pinpoint. With all my favorite songs, it strongly reflects myself or what I think I feel about myself.
This song really speaks to my quiet and withdrawn side. I love that line "you've said so much in silence now I truly am disguised". I think that sums up a lot of relationships I have in real life--family, school, friends, anywhere.Too Much Between Us
by Procol Harum
There's you, you're sleeping over there
whilst me I'm sitting here
with so much sea between us
I can't make it much more clear
There'll be no time for crying
We won't make it more than six
I could change my plea to guilty
but I don't think it would stick
Still those other ratings far too easy to despise
You've said so much in silence now I truly am disguised
Let him who fears his heart alone
stand up and make a speech
For him perhaps an emperor's throne
if he could only speak
Far too few and far to follow
For shame I'll heed the cry
Be with me when I need a drink
be with me when I die
Still those other ratings far too easy to despise
You've said so much in silence now indeed I am disguised
When Brooker gets to the chorus (the last two lines), it gives me a feeling of "eternity"--best I can describe the sensation. There's some kind of timeless summation of my life hidden in those lines, and it's hard to pinpoint. With all my favorite songs, it strongly reflects myself or what I think I feel about myself.

Great thread Syl.
Personally, I pay a lot of attention to lyrics in music, so here's the last song I posted in "Favorite Lyrics":
It has a lot to do with sex, but more so the corruption sex has on the young ("I think I can help you get through your exams; "When we're in your scholarly room who will swallow whom?).
Notice the "There's more to life than books, you know. But not much more." Since the song changes narration from a boy/man to a woman/girl, it's hard to tell who is speaking to whom, but someone is saying that there are other pleasures other than learning, and someone's realization of this.
One of my favorite Smiths songs. Apparently one of their more controversial.
Personally, I pay a lot of attention to lyrics in music, so here's the last song I posted in "Favorite Lyrics":
Obviously the "Let me get my hands on your mammary glands" (nipples for those who didn't know) is funny, but at the same time it reveals what I think the actual meaning of this song is.Handsome Devil by the Smiths.
All the streets are crammed with things
Eager to be held
I know what hands are for
And I'd like to help myself
You ask me the time
But I sense something more
And I would like to give
What I think you’re asking for
You handsome devil
Oh, you handsome devil
Let me get my hands
On your mammary gland
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, oh you deserve it
A boy in the bush
Is worth two in the hand
I think I can help you get through your exams
Oh, you handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary gland
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
I crack the whip
And you skip
But you deserve it
You deserve it, oh you deserve it
And when we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom?
And when we're in your scholarly room
Who will swallow whom ?
You handsome devil
Oh, let me get my hands
On your mammary gland
And let me get your head
On the conjugal bed
I say, I say, I say
There's more to life than books, you know
But not much more
Oh, there's more to life than books, you know
But not much more, not much more

Ah, I need to explain what the song means to me? I guess for me, Yes' Awaken (lyrics posted in other thread) invokes imagery and emotions I wish to hold on to at all times.
For me, the part of the song that touches me the most is the last few lines:
For me, the part of the song that touches me the most is the last few lines:
To me it means the constant search for spiritual awareness, and finding the answer was within or besides you all the time.Menolly wrote:Awaken

High vibration go on
to the sun, oh let my heart dreaming
past a mortal as me.
Where can I be?
Wish the sun to stand still.
Reaching out to touch our own being
Past a mortal as we
Here we can be
We can be here.
Like the time I ran away
and turned around
and you were standing close to me.

Galleries of pink galahs
by John Williamson
Galleries of pink galahs,
Crystal nights with diamond stars,
Apricots preserved in jars,
That's my home.
Land of oceans in the sun,
Purple hazes, river gum,
Breaks your heart when rain won't come,
It breaks your heart.
It takes a harsh and cruel drought
To sort the weaker saplings out,
It makes room for stronger trees
Maybe that's what life's about.
Winter's come, the hills are brown,
Shops are closed, the blinds are down.
Everybody's leaving town,
They can't go on.
The south wind through verandah gauze
Whines and bangs the homestead doors.
A mother curses dusty floors,
And feels alone.
Trucks and bulk bins filled with rust,
Boy leaves home to make a crust.
A father's dreams reduced to dust,
But he must go on.
Tortured red gums - unashamed,
Sunburnt country wisely named.
Chisel-ploughed and wire-claimed,
But never, never, never tamed.
Whirlwind swirls a paper high,
Same old news of further dry.
Of broken clouds just passing by,
That's my home.

Take, Take, Take - The White Stripes. Greed and selfishness depicted so well. The repetition of the line 'and that was all that I needed' drives home the point, and the tag line 'take, take, take' marks each upping of the stakes - the protagonist takes it further and further until in the end he's convinced himself that he deserves this from her. Yet another example of Jack White's brilliant songwriting talent.I was sitting there in a comfortable chair
And that was all that I needed
Then my friend offered me a drink for us to share
And that was all that I needed
Well, then I felt at ease
But then I'm not too hard to please
I guess you couldn't call me greedy
Then I was shocked to look up
And see rita hayworth there in a place so seedy
She walked into the bar with her long, red, curly hair
And that was all that I needed
And I said to my friend, "good god, we're lucky men just to even see her"
Take, take, take
Take, take, take
Take, take, take
And I could not resist, I just had to get close to her
And that was all that I needed
I walked and loomed around her table for a while
And that was all that I needed
Then I said, "i hate to bug you, ma'am, but can I have your autograph?"
And that was all that I needed
She pressed her lips against a white piece of paper
And that was all that I needed
Then I saw what she wrote, my heart is in my mouth
And that was all that I needed
Then she handed it to me, and I think that she could see
That that was all that I needed
I started to walk away but then I remembered 'hey, I forgot to get a picture'
So I asked her one more time, "could I have another favor?"
That was all that I needed
She was kind and posed with me
Then I knew my friend would see my celebrity meeting
Take, take, take
Take, take, take
Take, take, take
She turned and said to me, "I need to go to sleep,"
And it seemed so mean
It's almost as if she could not appreciate how cool I was being
She said, "good night" and walked away
And I didn't know what to say
I just couldn't believe it
Well, it's just not fair
I want to get a piece of hair
That was all that I needed
Or maybe a kiss on the cheek
I wouldn't wash it for a week
That would be all that I needed
But she didn't even care
That I was even there
What a horrible feeling

Mercury Rev - Chasing a Bee
Those seducers [4x]
bombed out lovers, gallant red flocks of mellow seducers, find eager seekers, deep deep down
beautiful lines from above and we're all a-glow
raise her head and things get warm, hold on to its leg, before it flies away sun lit walks, I feel no harm, my primitive words match my primitive heart
it's not as easy as it may seem, remember that yourself is steam
[chorus] and of course it don't mind, chasing a bee inside a jar [x2]
Then like sheep led to sacrifial slaughter, they don't mind, but they oughta, all the time (they oughta)
their pretty shells are so inviting, well protected
their eyes are rivers, they give me shivers
[chorus]
it's not time for the real life sign, it's not time for these fears of mine [x2] i'm feeling troubled, i'm feeling trapped, can't shake that bubble off my back
it's not as easy as it may seem, remember that yourself is steam [x2]
it's not time for the real life sign, it's not time for these fears of mine i'm feeling troubled, i'm feeling trapped, can't shake that bubble off my back
i feel no harm, i feel no harm, ...feel no harm
[chorus]
its not as easy as it may seem, remember that yourself is steam
what once was lost will never be found, keep spinning in circles until you break new ground
i love the poetry in this song, esp 'primitive words match my primitive heart' the song plays like a dream. and the ending slays me. 'what once was lost will never be found, keep spinning in circles until you breal new ground.' this song is what i acheive for when i write lyrics.

I simply enjoy this soung because it is by a woman who has reached a certain age (one that I have also reachedLandslide by Stevie Nicks
I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Till the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life
Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you get bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down.

I love these words because they remind me that my life is just that, mine. I need to live it for me; to follow my dreams, to seek out my desires, to live up to my standards. Not anyone elses.Scar - Missy Higgins
He left a card, a bar of soap and a scrubbing brush next to a note
That said "use these down to your bones"
And before I knew I had shiny skin and it felt easy being clean like him
I thought "this one knows better than I do"
A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
He tried to cut me so I'd fit
And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could've gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?
So the next one came with a bag of treats,
she smelled like sugar and spoke like the sea
And she told me don't trust them, trust me
Then she pulled at my stitches one by one,
looked at my insides clicking
her tongue and said "This will all have to come undone"
A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
She tried to blunt me so I'd fit
And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?
I think I realized just in time, although my old self was hard to find
You can bathe me in your finest wine but I'll never give you mine
'Cos I'm a little bit tired of fearing that I'll be the bad fruit nobody
buys
Tell me, did you think we'd all dream the same?
And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,

"Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together" - Morrissey
When you listen to these lyrics, you know that at least Morrissey cares about you. That's why I love the guy.Angel, angel
Don't take your life tonight
I know they take
And that they take in turn
And they give you nothing real
For yourself in return
But when they've used you
And they've broken you
And they've wasted all your money
And cast your shell aside
And when they've bought you
And they've sold you
And they've billed you for the pleasure
And they've made your parents cry
I will be here
Oh, believe me
I will be here, believe me
Angel, don’t take your life
Some people have got no pride
They do not understand
The urgency of life
But I love you more than life
I love you more than life...
I love you more than life...
I love you more than life.

I can't really explain why this one has been striking me of late, but it has. I imagine someone sitting in front of his/her tv and recognizing a trait in one of the actors/whatnot they are watching. That it is from such unlikely sources makes it all the more interesting (and is probably telling about the person or people they are noticing the trait in).Certain People I Could Name - They Might Be Giants
The few surviving samurai survey the battlefield
Count the arms, the legs and heads and then divide by 5
Drenched in blood they move across the screen
Do I need to point or do you see the one I mean
The one in back, the way he acts
Is he reminding you of anyone we know
Isn't he so like certain people I could name
Halfway through the thirty minutes
Halfway round the world
Here's the story on the genocidal overlord
In the palace with her epilettes
Watch her little gestures as she lights her cigarette
Look at her, you must see it too
Is she reminding you of anyone we know
Isn't she so like certain people I could name
Disembodied and detached a voice describes the scene
As a lizard stalks a helpless creature on TV
Music underscores the tragedy
Eyes with no expression watch the unsuspecting prey
Who is it like, doesn't it strike
You as the very image of someone we know
Isn't it so like certain people--how could anybody miss
The obvious and the uncanny and the clear resemblance
Isn't it just like certain people I could name
It sort of reminds me of that thing I do every time I travel somewhere (and I think everyone else probably does as well), in which I think I recognize someone from behind, and then get closer and no.
Strangely enough, the two Johns (Linnell and Flansburgh) who are They Might Be Giants have characteristics of two of my oldest friends, which is why I refer to Flans as the "Eric" John, and Linnell as the "Nathan" John.

Life is a waste of time
Time is a waste of life
So get wasted all of the time
And you'll have the time of your life

Guns 'n' Roses
"Coma"
One, it's just huge. There's so much content. It's like a page out of a diary.
Two, the heartbeat and guitar rift just pull you in. It's almost hypnotic.
Three, there's that sense of disconnect that I sometimes long for, sometimes feel like I can never overcome.
Four, it's an argument with both the self and the world, taking alternating sides. That's usually how I work when I'm trying to solve a problem.
Five, it acknowledges the worthlessness of the social scene. Used to think it would be so great to be cool. Then I realized how easy it was. Then I got tired of it.
Six, it says life's hard, it's a tragedy. None of us ever have it all figured out. But we work through it.
And there's just more nuance to it than I can shade it at the moment.
"Coma"
I can't tell you how often I identify with this song. It's one of those songs that you'd pick for the soundtrack to your life (idea for a thead right there).Hey you caught me in a coma
And I don't think I wanna
Ever come back to this...world again
Kinda like it in a coma
'Cause no one's ever gonna
Oh, make me come back to this...world again
Now I feel as if I'm floating away
I can't feel all the pressure
And I like it this way
But my body's callin'
My body's callin'
Won't ya come back to this...world again
Suspended deep in a sea of black
I've got the light at the end
I've got the bones on the mast
Well I've gone sailin', I've gone sailin'
I could leave so easily
While friends are calling back to me
I said they're
They're leaving it all up to me
When all I needed was clarity
And someone to tell me
What the fuck is going on
Goddamn it!
Slippin' farther an farther away
It's a miracle how long we can stay
In a world our minds created
In a world that's full of shit
Help me
Help me
Help me
Help me
Bastard
Please understand me
I'm climbin' through the wreckage
Of all my twisted dreams
But this cheap investigation just can't
stifle all my screams
And I'm waitin' at the crossroads
Waiting for you
Waiting for you
Where are you
No one's gonna bother me anymore
No one's gonna mess with my head no more
I can't understand what all the fightin's for
But it's so nice here down off the shore
I wish you could see this
'Cause there's nothing to see
It's peaceful here and it's fine with me
Not like the world where I used to live
I never really wanted to live
Zap him again
Zap the son of a bitch again
Ya live your life like it's a coma
So won't you tell me why we'd wanna
With all the reasons you give it's
It's kinda hard to believe
But who am I to tell you that I've seen
any reason why you should stay
Maybe we'd be better off without you anyway
You got a one way ticket
On your last chance ride
Gotta one way ticket
To your suicide
Gotta one way ticket
An there's no way out alive
An all this crass communication
That has left you in the cold
Isn't much for consolation
When you feel so weak and old
But is home is where the heart is
Then there's stories to be told
No you don't need a doctor
No one else can heal your soul
Got your mind in submission
Got your life on the line
But nobody pulled the trigger
They just stepped aside
They be down by the water
While you watch 'em waving goodbye
They be callin' in the morning
They be hangin' on the phone
They be waiting for an answer
When you know nobody's home
And when the bell's stopped ringing
It was nobody's fault but your own
There were always ample warnings
There were always subtle signs
And you would have seen it comin'
But we gave you too much time
And when you said that no one's listening
Why'd your best friend drop a dime
Sometimes we get so tired of waiting
For a way to spend our time
An "It's so easy" to be social
"It's so easy" to be cool
Yeah it's easy to be hungry
When you ain't got shit to lose
And I wish that I could help you
With what you hope to find
But I'm still out here waiting
Watching reruns of my life
When you reach the point of breaking
Know it's gonna take some time
To heal the broken memories
That another man would need
Just to survive
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Celebrated Summer : Husker Du (Bob Mould)
Love and hate was in the air, like pollen from a flower
Somewhere in April time, they add another hour
I guess I'd better think up a way to spend my time
Just when I'm ready to sit inside, it's summer time
Should I go fishing or get a friend to hang around
It's back to summer, back to basics, hang around
Getting drunk out on the beach, or playing in a band
And getting out of school meant getting out of hand
Was this your celebrated summer? Was that your celebrated summer?
Then the sun disintegrates between a wall of clouds
I summer where I winter at, and no one is allowed there
Do you remember when the first snowfall fell
When summer barely had a snowball's chance in Hell?
1) I was born in April.
2) spring was my favorite season growing up in New Hampshire. after a long winter, it got warmer. and the mud and rotting leaves were vitality.
3) Then the sun disintegrates between a wall of clouds
it's going on my tombstone, so poetic, but not too much so.
4) the music for this song. Bob's guitar sounds like Armegeddon towards the end of the song.
5) greatest song ever.

Radiohead - Climbing Up The Walls
I am the key to the lock in your house
That keeps your toys in the basement
And if you get too far inside
You'll only see my reflection
It's always best when you cry in his arms
I am the pick in the ice
Do not cry out or hit the alarm
You know we're friends till we die
And either way you turn, I'll be there
Open up your skull, I'll be there
Climbing up the walls
It's always best when the light is off
It's always better on the outside
Fifteen blows to the back of your head
Fifteen blows to your mind
So lock the kids up safe tonight
Shut the eyes in the cupboard
I've got the smile of a local man
Who's got the loneliest feeling
That either way you turn, I'll be there
Open up your skull, I'll be there
Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls
Climbing up the walls
Well, where to begin?
This song is one of the only songs that actually unsettles me. It disturbs me. It's partly because of the tune itself, the fuzzy, distorted vocals, and Thom Yorke's spine-chilling scream at the end definitely has something to do with it.
But the lyrics help too. The imagery in that chorus is wonderful. It just perfectly encapsulates that terror at being unable to escape from whoever - or whatever - the narrator is. "Either way you turn I'll be there", and then taking it further; "Open up your skull, I'll be there". There's absolutely nowhere to retreat.
And I'm not quite sure what the "I" of the song is supposed to be. If pressed for an answer, I'd say I think it's supposed to be doubt of some kind. You've got this picture of some insidious being, creeping into every nook and cranny of your existence and refusing to leave. Also, the "I am the pick in the ice"... it's some sort of fracture, some blemish, on the face of an otherwise perfect and smooth surface.
Which means that "You know we're friends 'til we die" takes on the meaning of a terrifying threat. "You can't get away from me. I'm here to stay."
The whole song is just amazing.

Husker Du: Gravity
It's only getting darker
it may be moving faster
well, it won't stop spinning
but how long will it remain?
This repulsive world
the crimes we all commit
it's not your gravity
it's not your gravity
gravity
the tension keeps building
the changes are rapid
we're through competing
is it better to retreat?
this repulsive world
the crimes we all commit
it's not your gravity
it's not your gravity
gravity
Bob sings this song in a tightness that amazes. like he can hardly get the words out at all. and we have a song that means something! and it gives just enough poetic wording to leave open for discussion. it can mean what it means to me or you. without dissolving like sugar in the rain with too much pretty imagery. my view is that it sums up the personal gravity between us all, especially those trapped in whatever condition they are in.

Make the Dirt Stick
Chris Whitley
there's nothin wrong with stayin inside
there's nothing wrong stayin home tonight
all week long was a world of restless
whatever it takes for a little peace and quiet
i got a point bein right out there now
i got a well upon the hill
all summer long was a rain and water
sometimes surrender to god's will
whatever it takes you best now surrender
whatever you know you gotta tell them quick
scratchin the wall with some old barbed wire
whatever it takes to make the dirt stick
i hear them callin with a crane and hammer
i hear them diggin these holes in the ground
i feel like there's something bound to take me over
some do what you can in a mean old town
whatever it takes you best now surrender
whatever you know you gotta tell them quick
scratchin the wall with some old barbed wire
whatever it takes to make the dirt stick
i said
whatever it takes you best now surrender
whatever you know you gotta tell them quick
scratchin the wall with some old barbed wire
whatever it takes to make the dirt
stick
i am a lyric hound. i know lyrics from songs i heard on the radio when i was 6 an 7. (i'm a singer so...can't help it) so to pick just one is difficult. i do have favorite songs i like to play but duchess already posted Landslide here so i picked this one since i've been listening to Whitley a lot recently.
Whitley's lyrics (and this is just one of many that strike a serious harmonic with me) always hit home. i like the imagery, it resonates truth, it seems a lot like my old dad comin home from a hard day, and for those of you unfortunates that haven't heard Whitley's searing National Steel guitar licks...please...www.legacyrecordings.com/chriswhitley/[/url]

This is really freaky, I was just about to post on here, trawled through my media player when the song I was looking for came on.
What comes to pass - Kevin McDermott Orchestra
I don't want to hear know your reasons why
you're like a walking excuse a living alibi
if you give up before you've tried
I'll help you dig yourself a hole
where you can lay down and die
so get ready, for what's coming you're way
that dust on your horizon will be at your door one day
and it's a wheel of fortune
and though you might get a little bruised
what have you really got to lose
for what comes to pass
whatever comes to pass
whatever comes to pass
won't wait on you
I don't believe you can't decide
whether to drink or be dry, sink or survive
Do you need a reason to use your eyes?
Do you have to be told you have to breathe to be alive?
So get ready, you've got seeds to be sown
the weeds are sure to get you if your garden's overgrown
and I know it's a wheel of fortune
but one thing you can't deny, you've got to leave to have arrived
for what comes to pass
whatever comes to pass
whatever comes to pass
won't wait on you
There are a couple of great lines in this, Do you have to be told you've got to breathe to be alive, is probably my favourite, but it's the whole feeling I get when I listen to it. It never fails to make me feel better, but ultimately that decision is mine. I can lie in bed all day and feel sorry for myself, or I can get up, have a shower and a shave and go and meet the world head on. Sure crap things happen, but they happen to everyone, it's how you deal with them the makes you who you are. If you can keep doing that, then you are winning. Well, I'm winning and great songs and great books help me get there. Seriously, if you get the chance you shpild listen to Kevin McDermott, if you love acoustic rock, and trying to find your meaning in other people's songs
