2nd read of "Chaos & Order" ... initial though

Post by Usivius »

OK, this is the book I could either have done without, or should have been edited heavily with some editing of book three to make one book. There are way too many POV changes that seem really unnecessary, rehashing info we already know and asking questions we already know the answer to. Does not add to the story or telling at all. An example: any chapters with the POV of 'Free Lunch's captain. Interesting, but really, a waste of time.

OK, now on to the action.
-Nick has really gone off the deep end. He's now a total psycho. Any potential he had to be a 'good-guy' is irretrievably smashed by his loonyness. He is so single-minded in his attmpts to destroy and make the women who damaged him suffer. He is pathetic, and dies in a pathetic manner. I should have thought that Sorus' reaction to him would have been one of begrudging admiration for the utter chaos and damage he was able to attain! I would be freak'n scared of this guy! He's capable of anything! Same as Angus in his peak.

-More background on Angus, attempting to make me sympathize with him. I like the character, but still can't sympathize with him. At one point he even outloud and internally admits that what he really wants (aside from his 'freedom') is to rape Morn again. As Morn is a zone implant jukie, Angus is such a Morn junkie. It's definately not 'love'. At the very best, the relationship is founded on a bargain they made at the end of book 1. That, and Angus' multiple zone implants... heheheh.

-I still love Min. And How could I have forgotten about Capt. Ubikwe. Love this guy too. Movie: he HAS to be played by the guy who played Kingpin in that terrible Daredevil movie (can't remember his name right now).

-Morn's personality, morals and inner strength gets stronger despite her continued physical weakness (a trait in all SRD books). She is bold, daring, trusting and so acute to 'good' that I just can't help but admire this woman. I like her almost as much as Linden (ok, different book).

-I wasn't wrong when I recalled not being pleased that SOar didnt' get her ass kicked in a more satisfying manner. The same goes for Nick. i understand this is just the visceral part of me, not the abstract objective me saying this. Still, shooting Milos in the face was pretty cool.

-at this point in the series I was MUCh more interested in what was happening on Earth and the political wrangling than I was the people in space. Dios, Holt, Hashi, and the rest... all intrigued me that I could never stop reading if the next chapter was with these people. I recall the last book haas some great action and intrigue concerning the goings-ons and political struggless on Earth... can't wait.

that's all for now.
