Beorn's School Food Program

Post by Menolly »

My son attends the Alachua Learning Center charter school. One of the main reasons why we chose this school for him was because they only serve healthy vegetarian meals, and do not allow vending machines and choices such as Pizza Hut Pizza, both of which are prevelant in the public middle schools here. If Beorn had such choices available to him, I'm sure he would weigh 300 lbs. by now.

Back in May they were recognized by Nick, Jr. magazine as one of 10 Top School Cafeterias in the nation. Since they only serve vegetarian meals, some hold that this qualifies them as a kosher kitchen.

Beorn's school has finally put some of the article up on their website, plus another recognition by CHOICE. You need a pdf reader, like Adobe Acrobat, to read the article.

For those interested in seeing the articles, they are available at Alachua Learning Center Food Service. Beorn is the boy at the end of the line of students.

No, not a vegetarian, although I love vegetarian meals and make them several times a week.
