Why is it Ice and Fire?

Post by Khaliban »

Specifically, why Ice before Fire? That's not how you normally say that. It's easy to answer once and let it go. It gets messy, and interesting, if you start adding on more answers.

Not sure what you mean here. :?

Do you think that there is significance in the title of the series?

To me, "A Song of Ice and Fire" sounds better than "A Song of Fire and Ice".

danlo,

I agree. It's probably something like that.

Murrin,

Yes, but part of that might be because we are so used to hearing it "A Song of Ice and Fire."

IMO, I think it's more to do with having "of F-" (breaks the flow by the tiniest amount) and ending on a "-ce" sound.

There might be. GRRM doesn't do a lot of things randomly. I tend to doubt the name of the series was chosen haphazardly.

ACOK Spoilers.
Spoiler
In the House of the Undiying they tell of this Song, not sure what it means yet.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

theres a number of theories and it can certainyl refer to many things. imo most likely it is cause the two main themes of the series focus on ice (others) and fire (dany, dragons, and who rules westeros)

well, there WAS a movie called Fire and Ice in the mid 80s...maybe it the order was changed so as to not confuse people or to infringe on the title...
Think on that, and be dismayed
