The Zephyr Song
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Can I get your hand to write on
Just a piece of lead to bite on
What a night to fly my kite on
Do you want to flash your light on
Take a look it’s on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Did you meet your fortune teller
Get it off with no propellor
Do it up it’s on with Stella
What a way to finally smell her
Pick it up it’s not to strong - for you
Take a piece and pass it on

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We’ll find a place together
Fly on my wing

Rebel and a liberator
Find a way to be a skater
Rev it up to levitate her
Super-friendly aviator
Take a look it’s on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We’ll find a place together
In the water where I center my emotion
All the world can pass me by
Fly away on my zephyr
We’ll find a place together

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa - do you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa - want to
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We’ll find a place together

In the water where I center my emotion
All the world can pass me by
Fly away on my zephyr
We’re gonna live forever
Forever
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Pink Floyd, Learning to Fly

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladen, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing
Is there no world for tomorrow, if we wait for today?

Know Your Rights
(The Clash)

This is a public service announcement
With guitar
Know your rights all three of them

Number 1
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a CRIME!
Unless it was done by a
Policeman or aristocrat
Know your rights

And Number 2
You have the right to food money
Providing of course you
Don't mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

Know your rights
These are your rights
Wang

Know these rights

Number 3
You have the right to free
Speech as long as you're not
Dumb enough to actually try it.

Know your rights
These are your rights
All three of 'em
It has been suggested
In some quarters that this is not enough!
Well..............................

Get off the streets
Get off the streets
Run
You don't have a home to go to
Smush

Finally then I will read you your rights

You have the right to remain silent
You are warned that anything you say
Can and will be taken down
And used as evidence against you

Listen to this
Run
Lenin, Marx
Marx, Lennon

Nirvana

Come As You Are

Come as you are, as you were,
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy.
Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don't be late.
Take a rest, as a friend, as an old memoria
Memoria [x3]

Come dowsed in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend, as an old memoria
Memoria [x3]

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun [x2]

Memoria [x3]

Memoria - and I don't have a gun

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun [x4]

Memoria [x2]
fall far and well Pilots!

Godless

I'm checking into leaving, yeah I'm folding
I'm tired of breaking down and shaking this life around
I'm tired of praying, yeah I'm tired of trying myself
I'm tired of being taken all the way

I don't need to be godless - but I am
I don't need my head - keepin all my problems
I don't need your hand of god
I don't need to say I'm godless
With nowhere to fall, I'm all ready to fall

Day by day I'm like a playful puppet
And I stumble around
I'm aching on my brain and I'm in
Big trouble, big trouble
I still got to breathe, oh yeah
Like my shame this will all go down
God damned me that's for sure
and I believe, I believe I don't belong here

I don't need - to get my head kicked in
And I don't need to be another lost
Soul that can't find home
I don't need to get my face
dragged down in the muddy water
I don't need, to say I'm godless anymore

Still I'm gone
Still I'm on the run
Still I'm on the brink of the edge
Still I'm, still I'm feeling dead

I don't need to be godless, but I am
I don't need to be another lost soul who can't find home
I don't need your hand of god
I don't need to say I'm godless anymore
.

I like the picture in your sig, Esmer 8)

Now to contribute something to the thread.

Don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You paint yourself white
And feel the noise
But there'll be something missing

And now that you've found it, it's gone
Now that you feel it, you don't
You've gone off the rails

She kisses you with tongues
And pulls you to the ground
Don't go, you'll only want to come back again

So don't get any big ideas
They're not gonna happen
You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking

Now that you've found it, it's gone
Just when you feel it, you don't
You've gone off the rails.

Ahh.
It's a smiley version of Radiohead's video for Just. I think the video's probably a little clearer, but it's meant to be somewhat vague.
Watch it! One of the best music videos ever. And songs, for that matter.

While I'm at it, I'll post the lyrics.

Can't get the stink off
It's been hanging round for days
Comes like a comet
Suck at you but not your friends
And they'll get to you
And teach you how to be a
Holy cow

You do it to yourself
You do, and that's what really hurts
Is you do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself
Do it to yourself

Don't get much symapthy
Hanging out the fifteenth floor
Changes the locks three times
I'll still come reeling through the door
And they'll get to you
And teach you how to get to
Purest hell

You do it to yourself, you do
And that's what really hurts
Is you do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself
Do it to yourself

Man. I had to type that really quickly. Googling is for chumps 8)

Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With
(Power To Believe--King Crimson)

and when i have some words
this is the way i'll sing
through a distortion box
to make them menacing
yeah

then
i'm gonna have to write a chorus
we're gonna need to have a chorus
and this would seem to be as good as
any other place to sing it til i'm blue in the face

and for a second verse
i'll toss a comment in
i'll brew another pot
of ambiguity

then
i'm gonna have to write a chorus
we're gonna need to have a chorus
and this would seem to be as good as
any other place to sing it til i'm blue in the face
yes
we're gonna need to have a chorus
i'm gonna have to write a chorus
this would seem to be as good as any
other place to sing it til i'm blue in the face

happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have
happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have
you have to be happy with what you have to be happy with

then
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus
and
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus
i guess i'll repeat the chorus
we're gonna repeat the chorus

happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have
happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have
you have to be happy with what you have to be happy with

dam, that blows my mind! and I'm happy with that! 8)
"Tribute"

[Spoken]
This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:
[Sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)
[Spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay."
[Sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his Whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best muthaf***in' song the greatest song in the world.
[2-part skat]
[Spoken]
And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.
[Sung]
This is just a tribute! You gotta believe me!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion....

Tom Morello: [Plays guitar and sings] "It's in the grain of the wood. / It's in the needle's rust. / It's in the eagle's claw. / It's in the eyes you trust. / It's in the jackal's dreams. / It's in the sleet and the hail. / It's in the unmarked box that came today in the mail. / It's in the dead man's pocket. / It's in the child's first sin. / It's in the Constitution written in very small print. / It's in Colin Powell's lies. / It's in the shaman's trance. / It's in the cellar waiting, and it's in the best-laid plans. / Now, we could cut and run, take half the blame. / Don't stop now. That's why we came. / House gone up in flames. / It's in the national anthem. / It's in the scurrying roach. / It's in the closed partition between first class and coach. / It's in the relentless fever. / It's in the lonely room. / It's in the hands of fate. / It's in the pharaoh's tomb. / It's in the rich man's dreams. / It's in the poor man's hands. / It's in the body bags along the Rio Grande. / It's in the evening shade. / It's on the zealot's tongue. / It's in the widow's tears. / It's in the miner's lungs. / Now, we could cut and run, take half the blame. / Now, don't stop now. That's why we came. / House gone up in flames. / It's in the moon's dark spin. / It's in the cloudless sky. / It's in St. Peter's denial that he'd thrice deny. / It's in the distant thunder. / It's in the whispered prayer / that they won't find us hidden here beneath the stairs. / So consider yourself lucky, and watch what you say. / I got what I wanted, and you might get the same. / It's in bold print nailed to the cathedral door. / It's in the black, cold pressure on the ocean floor. / Now, we could cut and run, take half the blame. / Don't stop now. That's why we came. / Oh, Lord, house gone up in flames.”

Burma Shave
Tom Waits

licorice tattoo turned a gun metal blue scrawled across the shoulders
of a dying town the one eyed jacks across the railroad tracks
and the scar on its belly pulled a stranger passing through
he was a juvenile delinquent never learned how to behave
but the cops would never think to look in
burma shave
and the road was like a ribbon and the moon was like a bone
he didn't seem to be like any guy she'd ever known
he kinda looked like farley granger with his hair slicked back
she says i'm a sucker for a fella in a cowboy hat
how far are you going he said depends on what you mean
he says i'm going thataway just as long as it's paved
i guess you'd say i'm on my way to
burma shave

and her knees up on the glove compartment
took out her barrettes and her hair spilled out like rootbeer
and she popped her gum and arched her back
hell marysville ain't nothing but a wide spot in the road
some night my heart pounds just like thunder
i don't know why it don't explode
cause everyone in this stinking town has got one foot in the grave
and i'd rather take my chances out in
burma shave

presley's what i go by why don't you change the station
count the grain elevators in the rearview mirror
mister anywhere you point this thing
has got to beat the hell out of the sting
of going to bed with every dream that dies here every mornin
and so drill me a hole with a barber pole
i'm jumping my parole just like a fugitive tonight
why don't you have another swig
and pass that car if you're so brave
i wanna get there before the sun comes up in
burma shave

and the spider web crack and the mustang screamed
smoke from the tires and the twisted machine
just a nickel's worth of dreams and every wishbone that they saved
lie swindled from them on the way to
burma shave

and the sun hit the derrick and cast a bat wing shadow
up against the car door on the shot gun side
and when they pulled her from the wreck you know she
still had on her shades
they say that dreams are growing wild just this side of
burma shave
one of the greatest storyteller/lyricists of all time!! :)

heh. thats why I haven't answered your "opening lines" question, I found the answer, but I never read the book....just wouldn't be right.....

And I really think you have to see Tom Waits to get the full shot, listening just doesn't tell the whole story or do him justice...man that guy is gritty... 8)
