If you're at the bottom of the page, in the Quick Reply: box, you put the word spoiler inside of them thar [ ] things, with no spaces, at the beginning of the stuff you want blacked out, and /spoiler inside of them at the end.

If you've hit Quote, postreply, or you're starting a new topic, then just highlight the text you want blacked out, and hit the Spoiler button above the text box.

The problem is that when you hit the spoiler button it will either insert a spoiler-code at the very end of your text.

I have always found it more convenient to just type it in by hand, unless I am just making a very short post.

Since Vain put up the Quick Reply block (my suggestion, btw ;) ), I've been ultra lazy and use nothing else. Won't even use emoticons if I can't remember 'em. But yeah, that [/spoiler] will come up if you hit the button for quote to begin with and then type out the endquote. Basically it thinks, "Hey, that guy forgot to finish his quote!"

To be all nitpicky, tho, this Q belongs in the Q&A forum (believe this Q is already there).
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
