Quaan...according to the minimalist physical descriptions, Quaan has curly black hair, broad shoulders, and a transparent face - a Stonedowner.

Not sure what to make of that.

After watching Batman begins 5x on dvd, Christian Bale IS Thomas Covenant. He's the right age, and an excellent actor.

Well we can't see your hair or your shoulders in that picture...it was just the serious look in your eye, when quaan says to TC, "If you speak again, I will break your arm."

I am so excited by the 'news' (well *I* just found out !

) of the mere *possibility* of a TC movie - I was sniffing around the 'net this evening with the specific purpose of digging up any info on SRD adaptations (I've read nearly all his stuff, except for the latest Chronicles installment and most of the crime/mystery/thriller type stuff) - it was the approaching hype of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie that sparked my curiosity, I loved the C.S. Lewis books as a young kid, but even as an imaginitive youngster those books (and LOTR for that matter) still didn't have as profound an effect on me as a person as the TCC ...

anyway, onto the fun bit, my dream casting choices :

Thomas Covenant - the pivotal role, and so difficult to fill ! If he were 15 years younger, Harry Dean Stanton (Paris, Texas) would be *perfect* imo ... however, with him out of the equation, I'd have to go for Sean Penn, who I believe could capture the complexities of the character, and could physically fit the bill
Saltheart Foamfollower - Jeff Bridges
Elena - Iben Hjejle (High Fidelity) has a hint of craziness behind those eyes
the First - Joan Cusack
Hile Troy - Mos Def
Lord Mhoram - Liam Neeson
Lena - Scarlett Johansonn
Lord Foul - Anthony Hopkins
Bannor - Temuera Morrison
Linden Avery - Julianne Moore

I'd always thought of Tom Hanks (think Philadelphia) to play TC but he's now far too old. Christian Bale looks about right though.
The haruchai have always seemed to me to be like the Gurkhas - Nepalese who serve in the British Army and are legendary for their hand-to-hand fighting skills. SRD would have known of them from his time in India I think.

Well, I finally saw King Kong last week.

In another thread I myself wrote:

I have to say that after seeing this movie I am more, not less, convinced.

Brody plays Jack Driscoll. Let's just look at the casting sheet for Jack Driscoll.

A bookish writer, male, principled and aloof, but capable of passion. Finds himself in a land of adventures and danger, where he finds the depth of courage needed to persue his convictions and wrest victory from unbeatable odds.

Duh!

So not only is he a great actor (Academy Award) with the right physical characteristics (slim, intellectual, somewhat haggard), but Hollywood has cast him in similar roles.

I have to say I think Ioann Gryffud could do the acting. It's going to take a hell of an actor to show the self-contempt of TC. If you've only seen him in Hornblower then I suggest (If you can find it) a mini-series called "Soldiers" where he plays an admittedly similar role. But the boy can act...

nb notice my use of the word "boy" He may be too young.

Nicolas Cage is not IMHO as stupid an idea as it might seem. He does have range.

Many times I have seen NC on-screen and thought: " I can't relate to this character"

And I mean that in a good way. That's what the TC role needs.

Steve Buscemi was a good call, but I don't think he has the gravitas.

Willem Defoe is all class, but too old, and perhaps not the epitome of Covenants broken marital dream in the real world.

Johnny Depp has the range, but is just too good-looking.

Ed Norton intrugues me, though...

I picture Jim Caveazel (or however you spell it) as TC. He played a good Jesus.

My, my, my... there does seem to be quite a range of suggestions for TC and others. While pondering who could be Lena, Hile Troy, Quaan and others; I think we need to focus particular attention on only two: TC and Mhoram.

There seems to be a bipolar-esque nature to these two gentlemen. Who we choose for one must integrate well with the other.

For TC, I like C. Bale (somewhere between The Machinist & Batman in form).

For Mhoram... hmm... the actor needs incredible subtlety. We see in the books that there are reserved and hinted depths to Mhoram that ultimately reveal themselves in The Power that Preserves. We need someone who has a face with heartaching humanity, but also dire rectitude... I can see G. Oldman, or L. Neeson... but not 100% on either.
