Literary Tragedies in the genre, here are mine:
Robert E. Howard (author of Conan, Soloman Kane, etc.) dying of suicide at the age of thirty.
Robert R. McCammon (author of Swan Song, Stinger, The Wolf's Hour, A Boy's Life, and other masterpieces) retiring at a very young age.
Donald Wollheim's daughter taking over DAW Books after her father's death, and summarily dropping publication of future John Norman Gor books, Ken Bulmer's Dray Prescot series and E. C. Tubb's Earl Dumarest series.
The inexplicable disappearance of Mark Ramsay's Draco Falcon series after only four volumes in the early eighties.
The ridiculous and outrageous wait for David Gerrold's War Against the Chtorr series (begun in the mid-seventies and still only half finished).
Possible future tragedies - if Messrs. Donaldson and Martin do not live long enough to complete their respective series.
