Semi-Solution to Stuck Threads

Post by Alynna Lis Eachann »

Since we still get the odd stuck thread here and there, I thought I'd post this semi-fix to the problem. It won't unstick the thread, but it will let you see what the last actual post was, so you don't have to post a *bump* before replying. I've used this trick for other things, but it never occured to me to try it on a stuck thread until recently. Let me know if it works for you guys (heh, or if I'm the last one to figure this out  ).

Assume this is the address of the thread you want to view (this is the Archeology thread in Gen Disc.): kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1253&start=285

Note the last bit: t=1253&start=285 - the t=1253 is the topic, and the start=285 is the post at which the board will start displaying the thread. In the example, this is the last page of the topic.

When you see that a topic has been updated but can't see a new post, change the start= number to something that is one or two higher than the current display. For example: kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1253&start=288

Click on this link, and you'll see that a different post starts the page now. (At the moment, it's the last post in the thread.)

If you have a single-page thread that's stuck, the &start=(number) won't be there. Just add it and start at a number other than 1 (ex: &start=3).

Make sense? I hope so. I'm lousy at directions. :P

Do you do all of this before or after you put your left foot in and shake it all about?

;)

Heh, just kidding. But thanks, A. Good instructions. I hope these are able to help some people get around the forum bugs.-jay

Another thing that works is to click on the name of the person who made the last post on the thread, go to 'Find all posts by...' and click on the appropriate subject. It'll take you right to the end of the thread.

The easiest way is just to hit Post Reply, and scroll down, you can see the last buch of posts.

See, that's what I'm trying to avoid. Stop kicking the threads. They're sensitive! Somebody's going to call us in for thread abuse one of these days... ;)
