America's Army

Post by Nav »

Has anyone else tried this out? It's officially the biggest file I've ever downloaded! It's even too big to burn on to one CD (something of an oversight perhaps).

When I first heard about it i thought free game+army+wartime=recruitment drive and to be honest, the propaganda is laid on a bit thick at times. Especially during the lengthy training sessions you have to complete before you can actually play online. The game appears to be a rich and multi-faceted beast though, with lots of variety in training and missions, expansive-yet-playable controls and a depth I don't think I've ever seen in an FPS before. And did I mention that it's free?

I can't help feeling that, as a recruitment tool, A'sA would be fatally flawed. It would take a harsh critic to say that all online gamers are cynical, spotty, overweight sociopaths whose corporeal form serves only to sustain them until they can upload their consciousness to the internet, but it would take a fool to say that none of them were. The next time I frag a square-jawed and patriotic college quarterback, I'll let you know.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

I used Fileshack to download it, you have to create an account but at least its free.

Currently downloaded 28% - 2 hours left.

Yeah, FileShack rocks. As far as I'm aware they never send you emails either and you can download at ~200kb/s. Great for game patches (especially the WoW ones, as Blizzard's P2P download system sux0rs) and big files like A'sA. Incidentally I never actually got into this game as it's really really hard. The training element is interesting but I could never work out the difference between friend and foe. I kept on shooting my own teammates and being put in the stockade! I ended up going back to my Halo clan, you can't go wrong with red vs blue.
