When I said that Dennis was a vegetarian for moral reasons, I did not mean that he has a problem with meat eating. It is how the animals are treated by the industry before they are slaughtered.
He can explain it better than I.
And there are plenty of unhealty vegetarians just like there are plenty of unhealty omnivores.

Cail wrote:Every Vegetarian I've known, without exception, has been horribly unhealthy. They're either rail-thin and malnourished, or they're chunky from all the breads in their diet.
I can't be a vegetarian for this very reason. I simply do not eat enough, on the whole, to be able to live without meat. If I were to live a vegetarian diet (no fish - they are in the animal kingdom, people!), even eating eggs and dairy, then I would probably die of malnourishment. Tried it once when I was younger. Bad end.

I don't get, though, how people get fat off of bread. It's bread, for god's sake, not lard! Maybe it's the quality of bread most Americans eat... Wonderbread, anyone?

I do have an issue with the way livestock and poultry is slaughtered, though, and I would much prefer to eat something somebody shot than something from the grocery store. I cannot stand people who say that hunting is cruel as they bite into their roast turkey or hamburger. Obviously they've never been to a factory farm or slaughterhouse.

I don't eat veal or lamb, though. I draw the limit at baby animals.

And yes, humans may be omnivores, but I love a good, raw steak (cow, wave to fire; fire, wave to cow), or steak tar-tar (fire? what fire?).

bread is just pure carbs. carbs make you fat.its a simple as that. i dont want to sound too blunt here but being a vegetarian does not mean your going to be especially fat OR especially thin. i DO take extra protein powder to supplement my diet but i do that mainly because i work out and i need EXTRA protein. there is enough protein in things like cheese, milk, eggs, nuts etc to not require meat. there is absoloutly NONONONO way anyone NEEDS to eat meat for their diet. lean chicken breast or steak gives your body more protein than it could possibly need and most of it just gets flushed out of your system.

come ON!!! yer talkin to the TOAST queen, here!!! lordy. i could eat toast till the cows come home!!!
and i just don't metabolize it well, either, have always had a kind of slow metablolism. and now i'm 47!!! slower and slower!!! crimeny. i weighed 170 lbs! this time last year and am only 5'5"!!!! now, since eating a veggie and meat heavy diet and taking vitamins (i've become addicted to V-8 and string cheese and grapes and smoked gouda!!) i've lost 30 of the 45 lbs i was overweight. but i can't eat toast or pizza or biscuits or pastry or cake or most anything else you make with flour.

Protein is not the only thing found in meats. There are vitamins, minerals and trace elements in meats that aren't found in eggs and dairy. Also, eggs and dairy in similar portions will not build muscle the way meat will. To make up for not eating meat, I would have to eat two or three times as much as I do, and I simply can't do that. I am not psychologically or physically set up for the kinds of foods and portions vegetarians need to eat, and I do too much physical work to sustain myself on what I would be able to eat.

More power to you, tazzy. I wish I could be a vegetarian. Like I said, I tried. It was not in any way a success.

How much bread does one have to eat to get fat off of it? So many societies eat large amounts of bread as part of a full diet, and you don't see a high percentage of obese people there.

ive found it moderately challenging being a veggie. i geuss my experiences are tempered by the fact that ive ALWAYS taken extra protein, vitamins, creatin and other supplements so the change is relatively small for me.if your not motivated by any moral purpose or dont have a specific reason to try it, your right its probably not worth it.

my point was simply that if you are prepared to put that bit of extra work in until it becomes second nature there is no reason you should gain or lose weight.

Heh, well, I won't gain any, that's for sure. I think I'd have to sell my soul to gain ten pounds.

Go ahead. Be jealous. Everyone else is. :P

as far as bread/carbs go, well theres an entire myriad of reasons or well backed up 'theories'. its basically because it contains excess calories. but sodium which is found heavily in carbs can add pounds and the release of insulin(aids in the way your body stores fat) is affected by eating carbs aswell.

processed carbs i.e the carbs that you buy in the local supermarket are far worse though. they have added sugars and salts.

Yes but were we made to forse breed animals in appauling conditions and slaughter them as cruely as we can, and then eat about, oh I don't know maybe 20-25% of the animal and throw away the rest?

That's why I prefer Hunted or fished foods..it more natural.
