Famous Women You've Never Heard Of

Post by lucimay »

last night i had the bright idea to start a Fannie Lou Hamer thread in the Tank but i decided this topic would be more expansive!
i took 2 courses of Women in US History and found out about a lot of women who's names i'd never HEARD before in any history course. i thought it might make an interesting topic....not limited to US History either.

and first on MY list is
Fannie Lou Hamer, delegate to the
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party

i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

Alice Paul, Luimay you just made me smile. Studied and read US history for over 40 yrs. never heard of her until the made for HBO movie Iron jawed angels. A truly stellar performance by Hillary Swank. Another, character from the movie almost as improtant Alice Paul was Inez Millholand.

big points for you Prom_Star!!!

i asked a group of my coworkers (and these are people with COLLEGE DEGREES!!) to name 3 famous men...they had no problem coming up with the likes of T Jefferson, MLK, Cpt John Smith, so on and so forth...
for Women they came up with answers like

"uh, Pochahantas, i don't know what she did but i know they put her on a quarter for it!" arg. that was Sacagawea dipthong and it was a dollar.

"betsy ross" now THERE'S an important woman in US history. sheesh.

"that woman who did the underground railroad thing. didn't she start the red cross too?"

something is SERIOUSLY WRONG with US educational system folks!! :x

There are so many more famous men to pick from. Most things that have been done have been done by men (except those "first woman to..." things, they don't count though)

How about this lady:

www.galafilm.com/1812/e/people/secord.html

We learned about her (slightly) in history class-all that's left are nice little chocolat shops with her name on them; but she was a pretty remarkable young lady.
I thought you were a ripe grape
a cabernet sauvignon
a bottle in the cellar
the kind you keep for a really long time
