Killing Me Softly With His Song
( Roberta Flack )

Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song ...

I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes.

Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song ...

I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd,
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud.
I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on ...

Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song ...

He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair.
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there.
But he just kept on singing, singing clear and strong.

Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song ...

He was strumming, oh, he was singing my song.
Killing me softly with his song,
Killing me softly with his song,
Telling my whole life with his words,
Killing me softly with his song ...
With his song ...

Reflections
Diana Ross & The Supremes
(Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Edward Holland, Jr.)

Through the mirror of my mind
Time after time
I see reflections of you and me

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

Oh, I'm all alone now
No love to shield me
Trapped in a world
That's a distorted reality

Hapiness you took from me
And left me alone
With only memories

Through the mirror of my mind
Through these tears that I'm crying
Reflects a hurt I can't control
'Cause although you're gone
I keep holding on
To the happy times
Oh, when you were mine

As I peer through the window
Of lost time
Looking over my yesterdays
And all the love I gave all in vain
(All the love) All the love
That I've waisted
(All the tears) All the tears
That I've taisted
All in vain

Through the hollow of my tears
I see a dream that's lost
From the hurt
That you have caused

Everywhere I turn
Seems like everything I see
Reflects the love that used to be

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust

After all the nights
I sat alone and wept
Just a handful of promisses
Are all that's left of loving you

Reflections of
The way life used to be
Reflections of
The love you took from me

In you I put
All my faith and trust
Right before my eyes
My world has turned to dust...

This..in my humble little opinion..is the best rock anthem ever written:

Stairway to Heaven
Robert Plant/Jimmy Page

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

(one of the most awesome guitar solos)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

Jon Lord, famous for his wonderful Hammond organ is less known for sensitive lyrics and classical scoring, but his "Pictured Within" Cd has several classics in it. The following was sung by Miller Anderson (Jon Lord wrote the music and lyrics)

PICTURED WITHIN (lyrics by Jon Lord)

here be friends...
here be heroes...
here be sunshine...
here be grey...
here be life...
here love lies bleeding...
memories so hazy...
and dreams that drove me crazy

here be down...
here be paradise...
here be starbright...
here be pain...
here be smiles in eyes like rainbows...
my father and my mother...
my sisters and my brother -
pictured within

where there're shadows ill met by moonlight...
there are dragons I have slain...
and here be bright eyes with hair so golden...
sunrise and sunset and running free...
and laughing at the rain

here be home...
here be travellin'...
here be thunder...
here be blue...
and Sometimes heaven and thoughts of wonder...
the Miracle of children...
a poet and a pilgrim

kith and kin - pictured within
lose and win - pictured within

"Do you have a wife?"
"At one time."
"What happened to her?"
"She has been dead."
"How long ago did she die?"
"Two thousand years."

In the 80's my hubby and I went to NYC, fascinating place, that was the only time I have ever been there. It was our anniversary, before the children came. And, he surprised me with tickets to The Phantom of the Opera. I have never seen anything so beautiful before that and haven't since. Anyway, here is my favorite song...the original London Cast soundtrack version. Micheal Crawford...

The Music of the Night

I have brought you
to the seat of sweet
music's throne ...
to this kingdom
where all must pay
homage to music ...
music...

You have come here,
for one purpose,
and one alone ...
I first heard you sing,
I have needed
you with me,
to serve me, to sing,
for my music ...
my music ...

Night-time sharpens,
heightens each sensation ...
Darkness stirs and
wakes imagination ...
Silently the senses
abandon their defenses ...

Slowly, gently
night unfurls its splendour ...
Grasp it, sense it -
tremulous and tender ...
Turn your face away
from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away
from cold, unfeeling light -
and listen to
the music of the night ...

Close your eyes
and surrender to your
darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts
of the life
you knew before!
Close your eyes,
let your spirit
start to soar!
And you'll live
as you've never
lived before ...

Softly, deftly,
music shall surround you ...
Feel it, hear it,
closing in around you ...
Open up your mind,
let your fantasies unwind,
in this darkness which
you know you cannot fight -
the darkness of
the music of the night.

Let your mind
start a journey through a
strange, new world!
Leave all thoughts
of the world
you knew before!
Let your soul
Take you where you
long to be!
Only then
can you belong
to me ...

Floating, falling,
sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me,
savour each sensation!
Let the dream begin,
let your darker side give in
to the power of
the music that I write -
the power of
the music of the night ...

You alone
can make my song take flight -
help me make the music of the night ...

Absolutely breathtaking...
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

~fly fly little wing, fly where only angels sing~

~this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you~

...for then I could fly away and be at rest. Sweet rest, Mom. We all love and miss you.

That was my favorite song on that soundtrack too. Never got to see it tho you lucky devil. It reminds me of another song about the night by Depeche Mode. Waiting for the Night to Fall

I'm waiting for the night to fall
I know that it will save us all
When everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality
I'm waiting for the night to fall
When everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel
Is tranquility

There is a star in the sky
Guiding my way with its light
And in the glow of the moon
Know my deliverance will come soon

There is a sound in the calm
Someone is coming to harm
I press my hands to my ears
It's easier here just to forget fear

And when I squinted
The world seemed rose-tinted
And angels appeared to descend
To my surprise
With half-closed eyes
Things looked even better
Than when they were opened

Been waiting for the night to fall
Now everything is bearable
And here in the still
All that you hear
Is tranquility
"Hellfire! Everybody in this whole business, you and everyone keep accusing me of being some sort of closet expert. I tell you, I don't know one damn thing about this unless someone explains it to me. I'm not your bloody Berek."

Infelice, I saw Aspects of Love. I really liked it. I have the soundtrack too. :)

Foul, did you know that Killing Me Softly is about Don McLean? At least according to a DJ I heard a couple years ago.

I'm pretty sure I put the lyrics of a Jeffrey Gaines song somewhere back in this thread. Here's another, Headmasters of Mine.

I realize they meant no harm
And that they'd seen the truth
These men and women, young and old
Who tried to mold my youth

They were only teaching me how to get through life
How to punch the clock and get home and get a wife
They knew I was searching for things I'd never find
So they tried to break my mind by paddling my behind

All for the love of an innocent mind
They were the blind leading the blind
All for the love of molding young minds
They were too kind
Headmasters of mine

They themselves were products of a past society
They themselves were victims of the same atrocity

I realize I must forgive
But I will never forget
These men and women young and old
I'm forever in your debt

They were only teaching me how to run the race
Fill my position with a smile upon my face
Don't ask the question if it isn't from the text
Throw me out into the hall and ask who wants to be next

All for the love of an innocent mind
They were the blind leading the blind
All for the love of molding young minds
They were too kind
Headmasters of mine

I feel it's really sick
How so much is wasted
There's so much food for thought
That never is tasted
Just read the instructions
And fill out the form
And whatever you do my son
Don't stray from the norm

All for the love of an innocent mind
They were the blind leading the blind
All for the love of molding young minds
They were too kind
Headmasters of mine

(seems like a good time to, once again, tell everyone to read some Ayn Rand!!! :) )
All lies and jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

For some reason I have been getting into musicals lately......one musical I dearly wished I had seen was Chess.... this song tears my heart out everytime I hear it.

I Know Him So Well

Nothing is so good it lasts eternally
Perfect situations must go wrong
But this has never yet prevented me
From hoping for too much for far too long
Looking back I could have played it differently
Won a few more moments, who can tell?
But it took time to understand the man
Now at least I know I know him well
Wasn't it good?
(Oh so good)
Wasn't he fine?
(Oh so fine)
Isn't it madness he won't be mine
But in the end he needs a little bit
More than me, more security
(He needs his fantasy and freedom)
I know him so well
No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side
And though I move my world to be with him
Still the gap between us is too wide
Looking back I could have played it differently
(Looking back I could have played things some other way)
Learned about the man before I fell
(I was just a little careless, maybe)
But I was ever so much younger then
Now at least I know I know him well
Wasn't it good?
(Oh so good)
Wasn't he fine?
(Oh so fine)
Isn't it madness
He won't be mine?
Didn't I know
How it would go
If I knew from the start
Why am I falling apart?
Wasn't it good
Wasn't he fine
Isn't it madness
He won't be mine?
But in the end he needs a little bit
More than me, more security
(He needs his fantasy and freedom)
I know him so well
It took time to understand him
I know him so well

Chess the Muscial was written by Tim Rice and the music was composed by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA....I swear thats not why I love it ......honest

It opened in London in 1984 I think and then went to Broadway in 1986...I could be wrong.

One Night In Bangkok was another well known song from the musical that did well in Europe, Britain and Australia.. :)

Fixing A Hole
The Beatles (lyrics Paul McCartney)

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where it will go
I'm filling the cracks that ran through the door
And kept my mind from wandering
Where it will go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong.
See the people standing there who disagree and never win
And wonder why they don't get in my door
I'm painting my room in the colourful way
And when my mind is wandering
There I will go
And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong.
Silly people run around they worry me
And never ask me why they don't get past my door
I'm taking the time for a number of things
That weren't important yesterday
And I still go
I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where it will go

I guess since KW has no ABBA fans *cough*, I'll post my favorite song by them:
Take a Chance on Me
By ABBA

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(That's all I ask of you honey)
Take a chance on me

We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we're together
Listen to some music, maybe just talking, get to know you better
'Cos you know I've got
So much that I wanna do, when I dream I'm alone with you
It's magic
You want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair
But I think you know
That I can't let go

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain't no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

Take a chance on me
(Come on, give me a break will you?)
Take a chance on me

Oh you can take your time baby, I'm in no hurry, know I'm gonna get you
You don't wanna hurt me, baby don't worry, I ain't gonna let you
Let me tell you now
My love is strong enough to last when things are rough
It's magic
You say that I waste my time but I can't get you off my mind
No I can't let go
'Cos I love you so

If you change your mind, I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down
If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(Take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

Ba ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba ba baa ba-ba
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
*Sigh!* Wish I could craft a song like that!!

LOL Foul! I always like the Piper song...can't remember the name of the album it's on. But I loved it when i was a kid. My father was/is a big ABBA fan. And the Piper song was one of my favorites...that and Mama Mia. hehehe.
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

I'm pretty sure Infelice (IIRC) will come along and correct you shortly on the Abba thing, Foul. Personally, I think Abba is my least favorite palindrome (my favorite being panda bad nap).
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Dont knock the brilliance that was and is ABBA......sure they were kitschy and had some abominable lyrics to SOME of their songs (Bangaboomerang comes to mind) but their music by and large was up beat and appealed to a wide audience.

Its amazing that a Swedish pop group that won the Eurovision Song Festival can still have appeal today and that artists not from the pop genre extoll the brilliance of the music that they made.

Foul.....the lyrics sometimes were fairy floss but if you listen to the voices of the women and the music and the arrangement.....they were pretty complex and innovative for their time.
