OK, if we're going to be monotheistic, Jimmy Page is the numero uno Guitar God.

If we're polytheistic...

Ritchie Blackmoore
Joe Walsh
Mark Knopfler-Can't believe we forgot him too.
Eddie Van Halen
Steve Vai
George Lynch
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Rik Emmett
Ted Nugent-For Stranglehold and Great White Buffalo
Zappa
Buck Dharma
Glen Tipton
Everyone in Iron Maiden
Ry Cooder
Andy Summers
Dave Gilmour

I'm sure I'm still forgetting people.

Edit-Oh, and on bass, Tony Franklin (The Firm, Blue Murder). The guy's amazing.

I dig your list Cail... Are there any *new guys* like Zakk Wylde or Dimebag (R.I.P.) that rate a listing as well?

I don't listen to a lot of new stuff, but from what I hear, the virtuosity of the older players just isn't around anymore.

Now granted, a lot of that is because the music's changed so much, but the absolutely crazy playing that was going on from the 60s to the early 90s just doesn't exist anymore. Stuff's more riff-based.

bass players: yah, Les Claypool ... someone (Cail) mentioned Tony Levin(!!!), and let's put Geddy Lee in there.
Rik Emmett is an interesting choice... I cannot say Triumph was a good band (even though they are from Canada) but Rik was an astounding player and composer... have you ever seen some of his stuff wtitten out?! Some of the chords are absolutely impossible to play unless you have super dexterous 13cm long fingers! How does he do it?!

How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?

Two. One to change the bulb and another to talk about how Jaco Pastorius would've done it.

Has anybody mentioned Jeff Beck? Surely he eats the lesser Gods for breakfast! And since we're mentioning bassists, I must confess my love for Tony Levin of King Crimson fame, as well as Macca of the Beatles. Love following his basslines, especially in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

All of my guitarist friends like to rave about Joe Satriani and while I'd never dispute his technical mastery, I strongly feel that guitar-godliness and widdly-widdly guitar solos have resulted in a generation full of creatively-impaired guitarists.

I have worked with way too many guitarists who find it hard to grasp the concept that other instruments can carry the melody too, or who want to have a solo in every single song. To me, they are only touching on a fraction of their instrument's capabilities. An electric guitar can create an astounding array of beautiful, textured sounds yet too many people place too much importance on lots of fast, high notes. And sometimes, less really is more! It drives me mad when I have to work with someone who has no concept of sonic sensitivity because he/she wants to play at being Slash.

Rant over, some of the guitarists I really rate are those who, to me at least, have really explored the full extent of what their instrument can do. Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood was the first to really bring textured guitar to my attention (with that fantastic crunching sound before the chorus of Creep). Others worthy of mention are Nick Valensi from the Strokes (you know that keyboard part on 12:51? That's not a keyboard) and Carrie Brownstein (who's love of atonal guitar is at least partially responsible for the love-em-or-hate-em properties of Sleater-Kinney).

With all due respect to Jaco, I think his skills are a bit over-emphasized due to his senseless and tragic death. It's the Randy Rhodes Syndrome. Was he good, great even? Yeah, sure. But the best? Don't think so. I'd put Stanley Clarke over Jaco without hesitation.

and then there's

Andy Summers! Incredibly challenging to play for most guitarists, when you isolate the guitar tracks from alot of The Police songs it's a really complex and original sound and melody/rythym/etc., at least for me it seems. I think he is way underrated.... :?

UFO and Michael Schenker, KK Downing, Les Dudek, Pat Travers, Savoy Brown/Kim Simmonds..........

yeah...okay...his badboy stuff got a little legend and it's a sad and tragic story and all...but did you ever hear him live? watch him play? i gotta tell ya...never seen or heard anything like it before or since. *shakes head* in a hall, built for acoustics...seated about 1500, 10 rows from stage...i gotta testify here, never before, never since, have i heard anybody else do it like that.

heard Stanley Clarke live too...and that was a surprise as when we bought the tickets for Jean Luc Ponty...we didn't know who'd be playing with him!!! i've seen both of 'em live...and though i love Stanley...refer to above...but one man's Jaco is another man's Stanley...or woman's as the case may be...

and THANKS SHADES!!!! :R

cause THAT was gonna be my next post too!!!
