Most under-rated band/Most over-rated band

Post by Lord Mhoram »

Under-rated bands and artists: Orange Juice, Bryan Ferry, Joy Divison, Morrissey, T. Rex

Over-rated: U2 (they're good, but not THAT good), practically all modern bands (but not quite), Pavement, Metallica (if anyone at all holds them in high esteem anymore, which is doubtful), anddd I stand by my stance that the Beatles were good, but not great, and are therefore vastly overrated.

Agree on U2 and Selloutica. You're going to catch a lot of flak about The Beatles, but I think you're right. I'll add Coldplay, and just about every emo band.

Underrated-Rainbow, Triumph, Oasis (in the US).

Oh, good call on Coldplay. I didn't say emo bands because I don't think anyone rates tham highly. :p

As for Oasis...eh, I'm gonna disagree and say they are in fact over-rated. Everyone hails them as the new Beatles, and says they are great, but I think they're formulaic and lame.

Did I mention I'm a music snob?

Ouch. Okay, LM, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the Beatles. My counter-opinion to your opinion of them is this: if the Beatles are overrated, then so are the last 30 or so years of rock and roll after the Beatles.

For overrated I'll second the Beatles, and I'll add the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith.

No argument about the Stones and Aerosmith. I probably view the Stones the way you guys view the Beatles.

underrated = Gentle Giant, Spirit, Chris Whitley, Morphine

overrated = Eagles, Jefferson Airplane (not Grace, just the band), Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi, just to name a few

(i am not engaging in the Beatles, Stones, and Aerosmith bashing as i love them all)

Lucimay,

Totally agree on the Eagles especially, and everyone you named.

Matrixman, dlb,

Surely, Aerosmith is overrated. The Stones, ehhh, not so much. They're viewed as a good ol' rock'n'roll band that made some great records and good music. And they were a really good band. But the Beatles are elevated to godlike status, and called the greatest rock band ever, and that's just plain false.

always have and always will like rock and roll that's blues derivative...like Aerosmith and particularly the Rolling Stones, who, along with many other British artists gave America back it's own music, the Blues...the Beatles...well, i wouldn't call them the greatest "Rock and Roll" band ever, because so much of what they did was pop, pure and simple, but i'll have to say that no matter what you think of them, they were prolific, influential, and continually, album after album, experimenting and morphing and evolving themselves as artists. (we don't know WHAT the hell happened to Paul! )

Metallica, the Stones, and Aerosmith are only over-rated at a certain point. The quality of their music is pretty much inversely related to their popularity.

Metallica up to Puppets and perhaps Justice is the greatest thrash, perhaps even heavy metal band of all time. Up until Reload, they were still pretty damned talented, they just went hard rock. St Anger was disappointing on all levels.

The Stones haven't put out a decent album since '72, but before that...

Aerosmith was just a decent rock band. They were never #1 on the charts, and that was fine. But after the success of Get a Grip (which I think had more to do with Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone), the only thing that could've been worse for them was to get a #1 hit off of a song they didn't write. It's true; there's nothing worse than an ageing hipster.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Definately agreed on Aerosmith and the Stones (post '72).

I'll also add The Who and KISS.

Beatles? Overrated?... hmph... have to disagree with that. They started pretty much everything, except hard rock...
And I think U2 deserves the attention they get. They continue to make great music without ever getting boring (like the Stones... ZZZZZZ)

Overrated: yah, Coldplay definately... Britney :P , Beyonce, (OK, most 'pop' artists), ... Nirvana ...

Underrated: King Crimson (yah, I know I harp on them too much ;) ), Mr. Bungle/Mike Patton ...

the beatles are a great band. how do i justify this? they produced loads and loads of great songs, were great live and have a legacy that lasts.

under-rated...stone roses, the jam, placebo, black grape

overrated...U2, any heavy metal and rock ballady type stuff and coldplay

Agreed. I love the Beatles for their stuff before and after Sgt. Pepper.

:( The Black Album seems to get little respect from hardcore Metallica fans. It was that album that really made me appreciate the band as one of the all-time greats. Is it considered a metal album by fans or "just" hard rock?

Like a lot of people, I didn't get much out of Reload, except for a couple of standout songs. I still haven't checked out St. Anger.
