That band SUCKS

Post by drew »

Can we really even say that?

I mean it's all about personal opinions and tastes.

Any band or singer..even made one's like N'Synch or Briteny Spears are there because they had some sort of tallent to begin with right?

I try, to the best of my ability, when expressing my dislike in a band to say what the reasons are that I don't like them.
Ex "all their songs sound the same."
"The songs are boring"
"There's no effort in the music"

Does anyone have examples of bands that are actually NO GOOD..as in they have no talent?

It's also a reflection of where you personally are in life too.

For instance, the music I listen to now Irish, folk, Sinatra, some Country, Metallica (I never liked Metallica until a few years ago. Whiskey in a Jar is now one of my favorites!) I scoffed at as a teen and in my 20s.

And, God help me, I was watching and mildly enjoying a German Opera on high-def the other night.

Personally I an't stand Boston either; but how did they sell so many albums?

Some people must think that they dont suck.

Night Ranger ended up sucking, but their first album is quite good. I'd go as far as saying that Brad Gillis is one helluva guitar player.

I loathe Boston, but again, you gotta give props to the talent in the group, and the ability to craft songs that are still getting a ton of airplay.

To me, Metallica ended up being the Boston of the '90s.

I think Drew's right, anyone that gets signed can't suck. And anyone that sells millions of records (like Boston or Brittney) certainly doesn't suck.

Using the term "suck" does force one to think long and hard about how they feel about a particular group. I think it would be more accurate to ask what groups do you HATE. There are plenty of bands that are quite successful that in my opinion their musical abilities are questionable. KISS is at the very top of my list with no other band coming in at a close second. IMHO every song the band produced was garage band level musicianship but even a garage band can pop out a catchy tune and when you combine that with completely out of context costumes and stage show you get a lot of attention.
I don't have a problem with BOSTON. The musicianship of the band is very good in my opinion. I like plenty of songs off of their first two albums.
I like one song from Night Ranger. Back in the 80's it hit me just the right way at just the right time. Outside of that I don't much care for them.

rush
journey
styx
boston
head east
and any and all sound-alikes...

now before you RUSH fans start throwing rocks at me...the fact is, i'm SURE these bands don't "suck" in terms of talent or excecution of their music...but i wouldn't know as i so abhor and loathe the singers of these bands that i can't stand to listen to them long enough to find out whether they actually have talent or not. just the thought of having to listen to an entire Geddy Lee or Steve Perry vocal track makes my skin crawl.

the only band that i can think of that i ever thought ACTUALLY sucked was Big Brother and the Holding Company. what a really BAD and talentless group of musicians....Janis deserved SO much better for a band, didn't she?

Hmm. I may have to ban you for that, Luci. Or, delete your post and lock the thread....Rush is the best band, ever!

As for Boston, well, I like them. A lot. In fact, they quite literally are the only thing (other then Boston baked beans) that I can stand from that horrible place! (The Patriots are in Foxboro, so don't give me any crap about them.) I'd like to threaten to ban Null over this, but the simple fact is I'd have to get in the back of a long, long line in order to do that, and I simply don't have the time.

Now, KISS seriously sucks. I mean, they have NO redeeming qualities. Not one. Rick Springfield sucked. So did 38 Special. I mean, they had 2 drummers, 15 guitarists, and for what purpose? They sounded like a Musak version of the Allman brothers, without any of the soul. Cinderalla sucked. Ratt sucked. Poison sucked. Those two should have combined and called themselves Ratt Poison, and their garbage should be piped into the New York sewer system, to see if it really works as advertised. Dylans' voice, with the exception of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" is horrible. But, he doesn't suck. Stevie Nicks' post-Fleetwood mac songs are some of the most boring ever written, but she doesn't suck. She should have gotten Dylan to write for her, and he should have gotten her to sing for him. Most NightRanger sucks, as mentioned above. Most Guns 'N Roses sucks, but not all of it. Primus sucks, because I'm a fan, and Les told me to say that.

i'm sorry dAN...i knew i was going to take some flak from the Rush crowd, but i had to be honest...to say how i truly feel. i feel i owe it to drew and the integrity of this thread. and besides...Esmer and Sorus Chatelaine have already threatened to hold me down and make me listen to Rush so...i really felt i had to say it before they tie me up like Alex from A Clockwork Orange and play Tom Sawyer at me over and over till i vomit.

Excellent comments dANimal. I'm guessing there are watchers that think some of my favorite bands suck. Foghat, The Cars, The Ramones, The Vapors, RRRRRRUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH, Van Halen, Oingo Boingo, The Clash etc. Every one of those bands produced some music I didn't care for all that much.....except RRRRRRUUUUUUUUUSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

.38 Special was like a welfare center for musicians...."Can't find a band? We can always use a 4th bass player!".

There's a special place in Hell for KISS and their fans, and any DJ that's ever played their music.

I would listen to a lifetime of Ratt, Poison, Cinderella, and other butt-rock bands before I'd willingly listen to 10 seconds of Nirvana.

Most of the bands you guys are talking about are before my time, but yeah, I'm in the Rush Sucks crowd. Sorry, but my hand can't move fast enough to the preset button when Today's Tom Sawyer comes on the radio. Van Hagar sucks (yet I liked Sammy Hagar's pre-Van Halen stuff. *shrug*). Yeah, Kiss sucks. Here's a picture I took of my brother-in-law at a Kiss cover band's gig.
Image
GnR doesn't suck, Metallica doesn't suck much, Nirvana doesn't always suck (there are several songs of genius amongst the dreck). Ratt and Cinderella definately suck, and while we're at it, throw in Winger, Striper, WASP, and Warrant. In fact, if I could only save two hair metal bands, it'd be Bon Jovi and, alas, Poison. What can I say, I got good memories of Open Up and Say Ahh.

Current mainstream bands... tough not to just list the few that don't suck, but let's see... I really hate Nickelback. Can't stand disco... er, I mean Emo. I can't even go to the mall these days without being filled with an unexplainable and barely resistable urge to start slamming my fists into the faces under spit-pasted, black-dyed bangs with slightly askew hats. And Christ, man, you're not a girl, do not wear a pink shirt that was too small for you before it shrunk in the wash... *breathe breathe*

Where was I?
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

No, no, no! Nothing so dramatic! I'm going to start off with an instrumental compilation, and when you like that I'll move on to Tom Sawyer. And maybe even that version of Xanadu that could shatter glass.

Come now, Bridgeburner. There's no need to get defensive.

There's nothing to be afraid of. Step aboard Soar and we can discuss this in a civilized manner.

Oh, you won't need that singularity grenade.

I have here a disc containing Limbo, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, O Baterista, Where's My Thing?, Pt. 4: Gangster Of Boats Trilogy, and Leave That Thing Alone.

This won't hurt a bit.
