Billy Ocean really sucked. Does anyone remember why people kept getting him to sing on soundtracks and why MTV kept playing his pablum?

That's where I am coming from. I honestly think the Beatles massive popularity is part hype, part pretiousness (the whole bohemian thing is nonsense), and part actual appreciation of talent. They started off well, and when they got into drugs they lost it.Lord Mhoram wrote:I don't see what the huge deal is/was.

you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?

i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

i see you want me to say more on this topic...defend my deification further...
this was a band that was CONSTANTLY experimenting with their art. just when you thought you were TIRED of listening to the Beatles, they'd put out another album completely different from the last.
i din't think they had anything left when Let It Be came out. but the first time i heard them singing "Two of Us" i sat back and smiled.
i guess it's a personal thing for me. i was SIX when i first heard them. and their reputation as a live act preceded them to this country. and everything Lennon ever said in his music resonated with me, from Love Me Do all the way to Double Fantasy. he had my kind of sense of humor and his tongue lodged firmly in his cheek for most of his life.
and NOBODY could make McCartney whail on his Little Richard vocals like John Lennon. i liked the way they played off each other. and McCartney would never have written Maybe I'm Amazed (arguably one of his BEST songs) without the lifelong influence of John Lennon on his musical sensibilities.
so...that's what i think, anyway. will always love them. you're free not to of course!

My father was right there. He's from Liverpool - specifically Bootle. So when the Beatles were starting off he was right there - at the concerts. Even lived a block away from the first drummer. He shares my sentiments regarding the development of the Beatles. Loved the first years.Lucimay wrote:Loremaster wrote:That's where I am coming from. Lennon did some outstanding work solo. Jealous Guy, Working Class hero, Watching the Wheels, etc.
Syl: I meant hip hop with PM Dawn. they did a bit of straight rapping though (Plastic, Reality) of course Plastic is in response to rap, so may not count.
RHCP: I like them, but man they can be self-indulgent. the cds are hit or miss with me. when they are on, it is beautiful, a great groove. maybe the should just release eps?
