Arena-rock, for lack of a better definition is any band who's succesful enough to play an arena.
But I agree with you and Sammy Hagar, "There's only one way to rock".

Van Hagar wasn't bad at all, but DLR was the voice of the band; every bit as important as Eddie's playing.

I don't know..h was just so cheesy.
I admit that over the years he would have matured with the band; but comparing "Jump" to "Right Now"; Hagar was deffinatly the better singer.
I thought you were a ripe grape
a cabernet sauvignon
a bottle in the cellar
the kind you keep for a really long time
i never had ears for this band. i admit they were good musicians and all, i just wasn't into it. their material was popish to me. Roth was an excellent singer as was Hagar but it just had no appeal for me. seemed like my younger brother's music (of course even he, being 13 years younger than me, never liked them)
just seemed like sesame street rock to me.

I suppose a lot of what Van Halen was and is depends on your perspective. The DLR Van Halen was popular while I was growing up and I got into that version of the band, that sound. I never adjusted to the change. Van Hagar was in many ways more successful and more popular but not with me. I admit Sammy is a more accomplished vocalist but that isn't the sound I want to hear when I listen to Van Halen. IMHO. Its different for everyone.
And I don't think Boston sucks. FYI.
"If you can't tell the difference, what difference does it make?"
Eddie became a much better player after Dave left. The stuff on 5150 and OU812 is phenomenal. Sammy's definately got the better voice.
But Van Halen with Dave was an experience. Dave was by far the better frontman/showman, and the concerts were 3 hour orgies of loud music and screaming. What's sad is the best song Dave ever recorded with the band was Me Wise Magic off the greatest hits CD. It's a shame that Eddie and Alex are such tools and can't just accept that Dave's Dave and get on with making music.

as much of a musical snob Ger (the mate) is, he totally sticks up for the Van Halen brothers saying they are both very talented musicians and even giving Eddie a serious place in the evolution of rock! but i just can't listen to it. sounds like bubblegum to me. and i am soooo NOT a musical snob. i love both kinds of music; country AND western.

There's some great Van Halen (Unchained, Summer Nights, Atomic Punk), and then there's some really awful Van Halen (Jump, Right Now, I Can't Stop Loving You). Eddie is a great player (though Alex is an average drummer), and definately deserves credit for his ability.
