Some Definitions That May Be Of Interest in Regard to LCTC

Post by Mr. Land »

There has been some discussion as to when the history of the land will come into play in the new series. Since the Last Chronicles deals with the corruption of time any of them are possibilities. I would, however, suggest that a strong candidate is The Runes of the Earth since one definition of rune is secret lore and lore can be defined as accumulated tradition.

The second book in the new series, "Fatal Revenant" is also interesting. A revenant is defined as one who comes back following an absence. Immediately I think of Thomas Covenant or Lord Foul.

One other tidbit. In W.A. Senor's Stephen R Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant: Variations on the Fantasy Tradition (published 1995) Donaldson is quoted as saying "In the Last Chronicles, Thomas Covenant becomes Lord Foul. Following the psychological paradigm through, what happens at the point that you become your own other self is that you become whole, and the universe is made new."
Something there is in beauty.

I need that book.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I've heard of this book I think, sounds good. A must-pre-read for the Last Chronicles. :)

Danlo--one additional question of the Last Chrons, are they the Third Chronicles of Thomas Covenant? The Last Chronicles? Or is there another name?

He actually said Covenant becomes Lord Foul? ohhhhhh I don't like the sound of that. Maybe, at the end when the universe is destroyed he "becomes" Foul. Becoming one in himself destroys the Land's universe and begins a new one...Creating a new Land? sooooooooooo many possibilities...

I want that book too!!!

They have it at alibris, and I've always found them more reliable.

Well, Mr. Land, welcome to the Watch. You have a surprising knowledge of what is happening. I find this interesting since, just recently, one of our members had a close encounter with Mr. SRD himself.

Could it be? Dare I say it? Are you Stephen R. Donaldson? :D  (Only kidding! I think I'm not the only one on this watch to hope that SRD secretly posts here!)

Anyway, I agree with your analogy of TC becoming Foul. I always felt that they were different sides of the same coin. Also, at the end of WGW, Covenant even says to Foul "We are the same." TC recognizes the kinship with Foul even as Foul ignores it. Although I know that with SRD, all things are possible ;) but it seems the most logical place for Covenant and still keeping him as a main character. It seems that we are all a bit leery (sp?) of having Linden as the main focus.

Also, Mr. Land you said
W.A. Senor's Stephen R Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Am I missing something? Everyone else seems to know who this is. Who is W.A. Senor? Anyone? Anyone? :? :)

Haha, no, no, it's not
W.A. Senor's Stephen R Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
it's
W.A. Senor's "Stephen R Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant: Variations on the Fantasy Tradition"
But no, I've never heard of it either

I can understand that. There is a huge revalation when we tap into ourselves and understand our own patterns and hardwiring. It is a core concept of Zen. Foul is a part of TC and when he realizes this to the fullest he defeats him. I guess he will eventually lose sight of himself and be overtaken by Foul once again. I wonder if the Creator had this mind and what part he plays in the LCTC.

William Senior is the President (and long-time member) of the Executive Board for the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, an organization dedicated to scholarly research in and around the Fantastic: Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.

This is the association I belong to, at whose conference I get to see the Donaldsons every year, and of which SRD is, in essence if not in fact, an author-in-residence.

So Dr. W. A. Senior, who got his Ph.D. from Notre Dame, is easily a "noted authority" on fantastic literature. He's a professor of English Lit at Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I see his name pass by my desktop several times a week on the IAFA mailing list. Thus guy knows his stuff. 8)

I recieved the book today and just at first glance thru the interviews with SRD, there are two, the only quote about the third chrons is the one that has already been posted. There are some very interesting quotes about the first and second chrons tho. The first being the "muscle" of the series, the second being the "toxic dump" of the series. Like I said, I've only glanced thru it, but so far I really like it. Will post more about the book after I do a good read of it.

Peace,
Furls
