Violent Femmes

Kiss Off

Album: Violent Femmes / Add It Up

I need someone, a person to talk to,
Someone who'd care, to love
Could it be you? Could it be you?

Situation gets rough, then I start to panic
It's not enough, it's just a habit
Hey kid your sick
Well darling, this is it

[chorus]
You can all just kiss off into the air
Behind my back I can see them stare
They'll hurt me bad but I won't mind
They'll hurt me bad, they do it all the time
[yeah yeah]
Yeah, they do it all the time
[yeah yeah]
They do it all the time
[do it all the time]
They do it all the time
[do it all the time]
They do it all the time
Do it all the time!

I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record.
Oh yeah?
Well don't get so distressed;
Did I happen to mention that I'm impressed.

I take one one one cuz you left me and
two two two for my family and
3 3 3 for my heartache and
4 4 4 for my headaches! and
5 5 5 for my lonely and
6 6 6 for my sorrow and
7 7 for nonono tomorrow and
8 8 I forget what 8 was for! and
9 9 9 for a lost god and
10 10 10 10 for everything
everything everything everything!!!

[repeat chorus]

"let us be lovers we’ll marry our fortunes together"
"i’ve got some real estate here in my bag"
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and mrs. wagner pies
And we walked off to look for america
"kathy," I said as we boarded a greyhound in pittsburgh
"michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from saginaw
I’ve gone to look for america

Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "be careful his bowtie is really a camera"

"toss me a cigarette, I think there’s one in my raincoat"
"we smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field

"kathy, I’m lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why
Counting the cars on the new jersey turnpike
They’ve all gone to look for america
All gone to look for america
All gone to look for america
you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?

Five or six musical acts are tied for my favorite, and Cat is one of them. Glorious music!!

The Violent Femmes were/are horrible college crap. I was sick of them a month into my freshman year.

Cat Stevens was great. Certainly not my favorite, but I grew up listening to him and John Denver. I can't think of a bad song by either.

John Denver - has he even been mentioned before? What a great talent, he was taken from us way too soon.

altho my first ROCK concert was Jethro Tull in 1976 (Warchild Tour)...my first ever music concert was...you guessed it...John Denver!!!
my GRANDMOTHER took me!! (she loved him too!!)

he's a bit too sweet for my tastes now but when i was a kid i liked him and he was pretty good live. i'll never forget the entire audience singing Thank God I'm a Country Boy with him!!!
