Eight Men Out - was that the movie about the Black Sox baseball scandal? If so, DB Sweeney was good as Shoeless Joe Jackson.

for my money, Eight Men Out is the best baseball movie ever made. with 61 following closely at second. Barry Pepper was great in 61.

Nah. Best Baseball movies? Here you go:

1) The Natural
2) Bull Durham
3) 61*
4) The Sandlot
5) For Love of the Game

I do agree that the HBO movie 61* is outstanding. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's about the home run race of 1961, when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record. Barry Pepper plays Maris, and Thomas Jane (The Punisher) plays Mickey Mantle (and perfectly too, I might add.)

i disliked Field of Dreams changing the writer from JD Salinger to James Earl Jones. i found the Natural to be entertaining, but too mythical on follow up. i'm in the minority on Bull Durham it seems. of course i'm not really a Costner fan. i liked him in A Perfect World and the Untouchables, not much else.

I don't think Eight Men Out belongs in a list of best baseball movies simply because it's more a movie about the scandal, and doesn't center on the game itself.

To me there can't be a baseball top 5 list without Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig in Pride of the Yankees...but that's just me.

Peter Lorre - 'M' (few could ever have pulled off that role like he did).

Peter Sellers - 'Being There' (on the surface a very simple role to do, but, really, it's all in the body language. Watch this magnificent subtle performance again...)

Srg. Cooper in High Noon I agree is his best role. Again, that was one that could have easily been just another 'wester-shoot-em-up', but Cooper does so much more with the role in subtle ways.

Robert Mitchum in Out of the Past. Probably the best film noir ever, and Mitchum is spectacular.

One of the best acting performances I've seen in the past 10 years is the late James Colburn as Nick Nolte's dad in Affliction. Very good, intense, yet a tad depressing film (to put it lightly...). Colburn won best supporting actor for the role that year, however he's probably better known as Our Man Flint in the old movies, like the Matt Helm series, that spoofed James Bond. (they're all worth watching--especially for the chicks, bay-bee!

danlo: Affliction was excellent. set in New Hampshire it is very true to life. they even pronounce Concord (my hometown) correctly all but one time. it's pronounced Conkerd. even the house was correct, i recognized the appliances from many older houses. the accents were good and the emotions true to a true New Englander. excellent movie, if you haven't seen it, do so now.
