DAVID LEE ROTH BRINGS TWANG TO VAN HALEN SONGS

David Lee Roth will be singing Van Halen songs again this spring, but not with the band. Roth is featured on three tracks on Strummin'With the Devil, a collection of Van Halen songs done in bluegrass style that will be released on June 6th. Roth joins the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band for twangy renditions of "Jump" and "Jamie's Cryin'," as well as a special radio edit of the latter.

The album also features David Grisman and Sons, Blue Highway, Mountain Heart, Iron Horse, and others offering new interpretations of such Van Halen favorites as "Runnin'With The Devil," "Hot For Teacher," "Panama," "Eruption," "Ice Cream Man," "Dance The Night Away," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love."

In addition to his country and bluegrass credits, Jorgenson has also recorded and toured with Elton John.

In the liner notes, the Indiana-born Roth explains that "my roots were always kind of country -- not the same country as my first band. Their flag had windmills. Mine had BBQ pit and a shot glass."

Any time and any way DLR sings Van Halen songs is A-OK by me.

I never thought I'd see the day you could make Van Halen even worse than they already were.

Smiths=art, Van Halen=crap you play at parties when drunk/listen to on classic rock radio, but what the difference is, I really don't know.

Smiths=pretentious, moody, nobody understands me music. Most of their fans dress and smell funny, and didn't get invited to parties in which people got drunk. They just sat around smoking clove cigarettes bitching that no one understood art.

Van Halen=Never tried to be anything more than what they were, a good party band.

Judging from your all too typical display of your "understanding" of The Smiths, you haven't listened to an entire Smiths song in your life. But whatever, after the last year or so I've learned to not even bother debating with you about anything whatsoever

Funny, I've reached the same conclusion as you. You seem to forget, I was actually around when the Smiths were releasing albums and touring. You like them, good for you, and I've never criticized you for that. I think they're pretentious garbage, but I've kept that to myself, because I don't need to insult others' tastes to feel good about myself.

You, on the other hand, have felt the need to refer to one of the most sucessful American rock bands (and arguably one of the best) as "crap" more than once. You don't like them, agan, good for you, but it makes you look like a pompous ass when you look down your nose at those that do.

Read back through the thread LM, and see who chucked the first insult. For Christsake, lighten up man.

That is crap Cail, and you know it. Whenever I open a thread in Vespers I read your post and it goes something like "I was around when so-and-so was, and I never liked them."

Alright. One of the best. In yor opinion. Just like The Smiths are one of the best British bands ever. In my opinion. We've both insulted the other band, let's face it.

Whatever you say, your Modship.....Saying I never liked them isn't calling them crap.

No. Me saying I don't like a band is not insulting. Your attitude and posts are.

Yes, and I'm sorry you're not mature enough to say what you think without insulting someone else.

Edit-In other words, I couldn't care less what you listen to, what you like, and what you don't like. You choose to post it here, and I've chosen to respond to it. While I may disagree with your taste, I've never demeaned you or the bands you like.

It'd be swell if you could grant the rest of us that same courtesy.

Edit again-Come to think of it, I may have said "Boston sucks" in one thread. I summarilly apologize to any and all Boston fans. All I'm saying is that I've disagreed with a lot of the posts in this forum (especially in the Guitar Gods thread), and I've mostly kept it to myself to avoid an exchange like this. LM, you're generally a good guy, but I'm surprised you'd let your taste (and my taste) in music get you that worked up. If you were the only one in the world who liked The Smiths would that matter to you? It shouldn't.

I've never demeaned you, Cail. I've demeaned the bands you like, sure. So sue me. Speaking of maturity: you're the one arguing about music with a 16-year old.

Granted I "demeaned" as you put Van Halen first, but you insulted me personally as a fan: Most of their fans dress and smell funny, and didn't get invited to parties in which people got drunk. They just sat around smoking clove cigarettes bitching that no one understood art.

If that isn't demeaning, then I don't know what is.

But I'm sure you can define it for me, right Cail?

Yeah, my bad for expecting you to act like an adult.

LM, you started throwing it around, I'm sorry if you can't handle someone not liking your music.

But back to topic, I like this sort of thing. I've heard the Richard Cheese version of Hot For Teacher, and it's hysterical. This sort of thing is great, so much moreso that DLR is participating in it.

since VH was over the top with DLR they should translate well into broad concepts. I could picture a musical using DLR songs from the VH vaults.

He actually had a short-lived Vegas show a while back.
