I don't get it. some overblown songs. that whole "last chance powerdrive" thing. some ok midtempo rockers, "dancing in the dark" and then some songs that are even more overblown : "born in the USA"

and I'm supposed to believe this guy is some generational poet to rival Dylan. (speaking of overated btw)

It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

Like a lot of people, I didn't get much out of Reload, except for a couple of standout songs. I still haven't checked out St. Anger.
The black album (I still hate calling it that) marks the beginning of the end. A lot of people were a little skeptical about Justice, but when they actually had a love ballad with orchestral instruments (and there were even some people who thought Don't Tread on Me was selling out after the anti-war message of One)... Plus, Enter Sandman really put Metallica into the mainstream, and if there's one thing a dedicated group of outsiders can't stand... It's the same reason most metal heads can't stand nu metal. Well, other than the fact that nu metal sucks. Every genre has its poseurs, but when the same poseurs make it big or previously respected bands turn into poseurs...

Then again, there were a lot of people pissed off that they cut their hair. How f'n lame is that? Sure, you can say it's a sign of them going mainstream, but if that was your major clue and it's the biggest thing you have to complain about, you're what's wrong with heavy metal. I'd sell out, too, to get away from fans like that. *shrug*

Heh. Like I said, I like all but their last album (even that would be tolerable if I didn't know what band I was listening to. should've known when I heard reviewers saying "it's their heaviest album since Puppets."), and there's a very obvious progression even from Kill 'em All to Ride the Lightning. And yeah, that's the same album that got me started on Metallica. It's a great midway point in their career.

i find the whole mythology of Bob Dylan to be annoying. he wrote some good stuff, but many others wrote much better stuff. so I won't be joining the cult of Dylan. i enjoy music, not some pompous ass slurring some crappy poetry. and yes, I dislike the Doors.

whoa... I can't beleive I'm on the same page as the sarge...
Yah, I too beleive Dylan and definately Springsteen to be overrated.
My belief is that good lyrics does not a musician make.
I do give kudos to Bruce for his version of "I'm on Fire" ... that is pretty good stuff (even if it is a cover).

I think the thing with Dylan is that he has some amazingly kickass albums Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks to name the top 3. On the other hand he has some really weak stuff, but when you've been around as long as he has you're bound to lay some eggs. One thing that we cannot forget is the way he changed the face of folk music when he plugged in at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

but like the Stones it is over. is the album after album of crap worth what he did some 30-40 years ago? add REM and U2 to bands that need to unplug and go home.

welcome to the dark side Usivius. have a Kristin Hersh album and relax. :P

Under-rated..Lots of Canadian bands like, Blue Rodeo, The tea Party, I Mother Earth, Hawksley Workman, Tragically Hip, K'Naan,The New pornographers, Arcade Fire....

Over Rated..a few Canadians who are not nearly as good as people think like, Nickleback, Feist, Nickleback, Tragically Hip and of course, Nickleback.

Why Is Tragically Hip on there twice?
They are OVER-rated in Canada...under-rated everywhere else.

Also over rated are any hip-hop/R&B songs that use an auto-tune voice enhancer where the singer uses the word 'Shorty' over and over again.

Over-rated: U2 (they're good, but not THAT good), practically all modern bands (but not quite), Pavement, Metallica (if anyone at all holds them in high esteem anymore, which is doubtful), anddd I stand by my stance that the Beatles were good, but not great, and are therefore vastly overrated.

Fin.
Agree with everything in this post. I'll add to overrated bands:
Led Zeppelin

Overrated - Metallica, U2, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Tool. Yes Tool.

Underrated - Black Sabbath, Fu Manchu, KYUSS, Yawning Man, Ten Years After. Could go on.

Metallica's one of the few metal/rock bands that I've heard who have any creativity in what they (Hetfield) sings about: Sad But True, the Unforgiven, Of Wolf and Man, and Creeping Death.

I LIKE Metallica and the aforementioned songs. I just think they're one of the most over-rated bands in existence, considering they have had no decent output for nearly 20 years. They're a band that has become a brand, just like the other bands I had listed as overrated (in saying that, I don't like LP, LB, SK etc at all).

^Not to the extent of any of the others mentioned, or 70's bands like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, etc.

Ozzy, yes of course. His wifes a marketing machine. And I would say his solo stuff is horrendously overrated.

I find however, when people are talking about 70's music in general (not about the history of heavy metal) they tend to give bands like Zep or Deep Purple the glory, and a mere cursory nod to Black Sabbath.

Considering the effect they had on music (and the first 5 albums being so
deliciously riff laden) I think that leaves them underrated. Its a well known fact in rock circles that if you try and write a cool blues-rock riff, its just as likely that somewhere, a Sabbath song has that riff. I call it "The Sabbath-Iommi Uncertainty Principle". They just took all the good riffs!

Over-rated: Pixies, several already mentioned

Under-rated: They Might Be Giants. Seriously. They keep getting better and better in my eyes and nobody is listening. But Flood as an album is over-rated.

Criminally under-rated: The Loud Family
