i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

You'll know it when you hear it, but if surprise isn't your forte (sometimes it's not mine):Lucimay wrote:Lord Foul wrote:Sean Bean in a video game movie? Don't tell me you liked the sequel!Esmer wrote:I didn't think Resident Evil was all that bad, in fact I watch it every time it's on tv, but then again, I never played the game, being an anti-console gamer, and I never had high expectations for the movie going in either. I just like it, heh.

I think game-film adaptations tend not to work because the things that make a good game are different to the things that make a good film.Queeaqueg wrote:Well Resident Evil became a movie so this had to follow. I guess movies based on computer games don't work becuase the games are usually really good.
Silent Hill the game is both alarming and enjoyable, but both of these effects are dependent on me being in the thick of it. Watching someone else going through the Silent Hill experience won't be anywhere near the same.

Saw it tonight.
Imagine a surprised look on my face.
Yes, this is the first ever film adaptation of a video game that has been both reasonably good and reasonably faithful to the source. Be warned though - it is also very horrible.
There have been various changes; some don't detract at all, and some are only noticable if you know what was there the first time round. None of the alterations, in my opinion, jar or fail to fit (at least to any great extent - minor niggles are included in spoiler tags below).
If you have a strong stomach and fancy emerging from a darkened room feeling somewhat disturbed, you might very well enjoy this. I did.
I will, for the record, state my main niggles and compliments (exclusively for people who have seen it):

Gripes:
Spoiler
1) The main complaint: People. Too many people. There seems to be a whole town full of people hiding in the middle of Silent Hill, and I didn't approve. I thought having all those wizened codgers tearing about the place lessened some of the eerieness.
2) The siren. Ok, ok, it's a minor gripe, but the notion that the creepy air raid sound that occurs whenever things are going to hell was actually a physical siren stuck on top of the church bothered me. How did those people know "the darkness" was about to pop up, and proceed to sound the siren? And how could the siren be heard with equal volume and clarity everywhere? Bah.
3) I was expecting gore, so I was prepared for it, but I thought the climactic scene was just unnecessarily red.

Spoiler
1) The moment when the school changed from "standard" to "hell". Impressive stuff, and quite alarming.
2) The kid. When I saw War of the Worlds, I rated Dakota Fanning (against my wishes) because she was the first child actor I had seen who didn't annoy the hell out of me. This kid is better. As Sharon she's mostly run of the mill, but as Alessa she really impressed me. For a child that young to deliver a convincing performance of a subject so adult and unpleasant is remarkable. I also take it as a sign of good direction. Even at the end, when entering the deserted family home, she managed to seem a little creepy without actually doing anything. I shall be watching out for her in future. Maybe child actors aren't all bad.
3) Music. The inclusion of a snippet of the Silent Hill theme right at the beginning is a prime example. It's just a little thing, but I liked it, just as I liked it when the recent (sub-standard) Hitchhiker's Guide film included the old theme tune. I hoped to hear more of the Silent Hill theme, but never mind. The rest of the film was full of music and sound effects I'm fairly certain were lifted straight from the game.
4) Creatures, specifially midgets and nurses. The midgety things near the beginning were really quite unnerving (particularly the screaming...*shudder*) and the nurses were simultaneously very faithful to the game and very disquieting.
