Hmm, my mousepad is very smooth indeed, but the surface isn't hugely reflective. It looks like it's been brushed and then polished, presumably the mouse takes its measurements from the tiny lines in the surface.

I have the Logitech MX510 and I find that on the desk surface, it's slightly twitchy because of the grain of the veneer. It glides on the slicksteel pad though, feels like an air hockey table, and the tracking is pin sharp. The texture of the steel can be seen quite clearly on this picture, the surface feels absolutely smooth to the touch though. Glad to see it isn't just me that insists on wired input devices. Wireless latency FTL!

I brought the Elder Scrolls and The Battle for Middle Earth over the other day. Should be great. I've also heard great things about Half Life 2. I think I'll buy that soon as well.

I've been playing Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. A movie tie-in game that doesn't suck, it's unbelievable.

Apparently Vin himself created the company that made it and he's obviously put in a lot of time getting the mo-cap right and his voice acting is superb. Add outstanding graphics and the innovation in a genre that traditionally lacks it (FPS) and you've got a must-have game for Xbox owners IMO.

Played a bit of Escape Velocity: Nova at the weekend as it's the only game on my parents' computer. It's still fun to play the standard game and I've only played a couple of the total conversions of it, great value for money.

Found my old Mega Drive in my brother's room at the weekend, so I've been playing Sensible Soccer and Street Fighter II. Halcyon days!

Also picked up Lego Star Wars for the Xbox. As a child-oriented game the controls are hugely simple, but I'm finding it a lot of fun.

Having a replay of Fahrenheit. It's very good... although I think its fun-factor has been considerably reduced since the first play-through.

I've heard that game is a great RTS in the spirit of StarCraft. Might get it one day, but I still need to beat StarCraft, damn it!

I bought Counter-Strike: Source but I'm a little bit underwhelmed. The graphics are great and I'm sure it should be fun... but I'm really bad at it and it gets boring getting a minute or so of gameplay in which I'll kill one person if I'm lucky - and then four minutes of waiting around for the round to finish.

I've been playing Counter-Strike since 2000 and still get adrenaline rushes. Office is my favorite map. Love when terrorists load up on shotguns and hide in the projector room. Chaos!

I found a server with only a few players and had a lot more fun because there'd only be a little while between my death and respawning. I'm very impatient. I even killed a couple of guys! It's a good game, I think, but the sort that I'll just play a little bit of every day or two, rather than my usual use-all-my-free-time-playing-it-for-a-fortnight-then-put-it-away tactic.

It's an excellent game. And the expansion - Dark Crusade - sounds incredible.

Interesting you mention SC - SC heavily 'borrowed' from the setting of Warhammer 40k (the universe of DoW).

Well, the only reason I mentioned SC is because it's greatness incarnate, and I feel morally wrong for not beating it in 1998. It's one of the few RTS games I give attention to, as I'm a turn-based strategy fanatic myself.
