well Stephen King sets a lot of his stories in a shared universe. so while the stories may be stand alone, it is in a consistant universe.

Reading Tim Powers' name in this thread reminded me of one of the most enjoyable 'stand alone' books that I have ever read. This was from back somewhere aroung 1990 or so, it was titled 'On Stranger Tides'.

Since I am currently not reading anything right now, I plan on digging this book up from wherever my wife put it away at and going at it again. I always loved pirate stories, and this one was the best that I had ever read.

It will make my third (maybe fourth (?)) read of the book.

Great stuff there...
