I just started Midnight Tides. This series is definitely keeping me occupied between volumes of the Last Chrons....

I spent the first 100 pages of Gardens of the Moon going, "Huh???" Then I couldn't put it down. Picked up the second book with much anticipation; again, I spent the first 100 pages going, "Huh???" but then couldn't put it down. With Memories of Ice, the culture shock wasn't so bad; I did think that was the best book of the series to date. House of Chains just left me in awe -- I couldn't believe how many plotlines he was going to have intersect in Raraku. Wow.

So I picked up Midnight Tides and read through the list of characters in the front, and my heart sank a little -- not a single name I recognized. I'm starting all over again.... But it's not taking me any time at all to get my bearings this time -- yay!

The writing in these books is excellent and the characters are pretty cool. About my only quibble (aside from the massive number of characters to keep straight) is that the maps are virtually useless. Cities named in the text aren't on any map in the book, etc. The best map was the one for the Chain of Dogs; the rest have been terrible. And I wish they'd put in a map of the whole Malazan Empire, just so I could figure out where Genabackis is in relation to Seven Cities, etc. But I know that the author has zero control over this, so I don't fault Erikson.

In sum, good stuff. Just know that going in, you'll be totally confused for the first 100 pages. After that, it's great. :)

Actually, the maps are all Erikson's. There were some mistakes in GotM maps wrt places mentioned in the text - they were fixed for the Tor edition.
And yeah, I've noticed sometimes places don't appear on thev maps - either they're not important or large enough to be mapped (these are intended to be maps produced by people in the books), or the map doen't cover te areas mentioned - as in Midnight Tides, where only the northernmost edge of lether is mapped. Personally, I'm hoping to see a full map of Lether in Reaper's Gale.

The 'world map' is being reserved for the Encyclopaedia Malazica, partly because Erikson hasn't had a complete and quality version made yet, just the copy I hear he keeps on the wall over his desk.

Well, he did start writing it a year ago, and was past halfway (and into the second half which he says always goes quicker) by christmas. He should be finished writing it within a couple of months (though it probably won't get published until early next year, but we're ignoring that for now).
And besides, after the positions he left everyone in at the end of Bonehunters, who wouldn't be eager for the next part?:P

I'm behind on this series - I've read the first two and Memories of Ice is sitting somewhere in the middle of my TBR pile.

But I'll say this - Steven Erikson is a fan's writer. By that I mean he cranks his massive books out in a very reasonable length of time . . . unlike some other authors I could mention.

I'm not gone! |G I may be semi-absent, but I am not leaving.

I've been avoiding this thread for fear of spoilers - though I'm catching up! Finished Memories of Ice and am now rereading GotM.
