Frank Zappa
Any Zappa fans? I'm thinking about buying his album Hot Rats to start off with. I'd like to know some stuff about him, though. I mean, just all the stuff he's done and what I should check out. I heard someone call him a "musician's musician" but not sure what that meant, exactly. I listened to Peaches en Regalia recently, and I really enjoyed that. He sounds very talented and his compositions very complex.

I've only listened to smatterings of Zappa's music, mainly Freak Out!, the first Mothers of Invention album - and it seems tremendously varied, from funny, intentionally-dumb pop songs to unlistenable art stuff.
However, whether you like his music or not, I heartily recommend his autobiography (from 1988 or so), The real Frank Zappa book. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read. The guy was a great storyteller and humorist.

Zappa is indeed a musician's musician; he was like a working college for many now-famous musicians. I don't have a lot of his stuff, but what I do have is fantastic. Let's see...Apostrophe, Over-Nite Sensation, Stricly Commercial (a good starting point cd), and Have I Offended Someone? are what I know I have, plus a live one (or two). There's a ton of Zappa stuff out there, some of the good ones are "We're Only in It For The Money", "Hot Rats", & "You Are What You Is ".

You really can't go wrong with Zappa. The first album I heard of his was "Sheik Yerbuti", and it's f*cking brilliant. I was lucky enough to see him before he died, and it was absolutely mindblowing.
Zappa was the musician's musician.

Zappa: love him or hate him.
OK, I like him.
"Sheik Yurbouti" is a fantastic album! Right up there with "Hot Rats" in my book. Another fave of mine is "A Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch" ... 'Valley Girl' comes from this album ... I really feel sorry for all those people who bought the album because they liked "the hit" ... the rest of the album is pure Zappa ... I especially like the title track, oh, and 'Teenage Prostitute'
I even liked his synclavier composistions from "Jazz From Hell" ... and even more so, the classical renderings of some of these compositions from "Yellow Shark".
Ah, I could go on forever... He's a gem.
OH! Has anyone ever seen his movie: "200 MOtels"?....
This movie reminds me of "Eraserhead" .. facinating but so weird it is almost unwatchable...

Great song! And, it was from Apostrophe. I also like The Mammy Nuns and Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?Earthblood wrote:"Watch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that yellow snow..."
Words of wisdom from Frank Zappa....(Joe's Garage, I think...)
Be kind to your web-footed friends, for a duck may be somebody's mother.
Broken Hearts Are For A$$holes is my favorite song of his.

The Man From Utopia ... one of the strange albums. As I understand it, the somgs are made up mostly of live material that was then touched up in the studio. For example, there is one some that has Frank 'scatting' or improvising a story over the band's backup music. Later, in the studio, Steve Vai adds guitar that mimiks, note for note/ word for word Frank's strange lyrics...
And I can't beleive there are six albums of Frank's guitar solos ... "Shut Up and Play Your Guitar" series... sheesh! I only know one person on the planet who has 5 of them...
I think that one was about the antics of a couple of band members on tour...He liked to sniff the glue from the other girl's panties...
