Thank You

I did, Joy! She is gone now, so finally this afternoon I went back to do some writing. First time ina week. Dreadful pace of life these days. Thanks for reminding me about the blog. Will aim wo make an entry tomorrow, which is my odds-and-ends day -- lots of losse ends to tie. The site you sent didn't come up but I did take a look at "LiveJournal". Can't make head or tail of it, but next year when the writing is done, I really need to sit down and get more involved with people and books. I find Plaidy's Murder Most Royal her best. The others I've read seem more superficial. This one gives a fabulous analysis of the times and the personalities -- I understand HVIII and Anne Boleyn clearly now, thanks to Plaidy. She was at the top of her trade when she wrote this one.

I can't imagine having such a pile of books to read -- got to be as bad as writing them!!!!

Dear Mary,

Sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back to you. Unfortunately I’ve let my hotmail account slide once too often, and lost everything but my contact list there. I check this one far more often. I’m puzzled, though. . . I could have sworn that this account is the one I posted on the contacts page on the brown private boards. Anyway, sorry for the confusion.

As far as the jam is concerned, I have just been using my Fanny Farmer cookbook. According to that (and to my Mom’s wisdom) all you need to make jam is fruit and sugar—provided the fruit is sufficiently tart. If it is lacking in pectin, you have to add some. Most recipes I’ve seen call for the addition of lemon juice.

The method is simple enough: almost all fruit uses a 4 to 3 ratio. That’s 4 cups of fruit to 3 cups of sugar. Berries and small fruits are crushed, while other fruits require being cut into small pieces. In my mother’s wisdom, peaches require peeling, while plums and nectarines do not. Anyway, the method is to measure the fruit after it is crushed/cut up. Then the fruit is simmered over low to medium heat until tender (after adding just enough water so it does not burn). Then the sugar is added.

Back to Richard’s time: I can’t remember. What happened to the young brother of Elizabeth Gray who married the aged Countess? Was the earldom Hereford?

UNH FOOTBALL RANKED NO. 1 FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WEEK
09/25/2006
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sports Network — New Hampshire wide receiver David Ball scored three receiving touchdowns to match Jerry Rice’s I-AA career record of 50 and help lead the No. 1 Wildcats to a 56-14 victory at Dartmouth on Saturday. With the win, New Hampshire remains at No. 1 in The Sports Network I-AA top 25. The Wildcats garnered 80 of a possible 104 first-place votes and 2,574 points to take home the No. 1 spot for the third week in a row. Ball will try to break the I-AA reception touchdown mark and the Wildcats will try to maintain their ranking when they travel to No. 17 Delaware on Saturday.

Yesterday I was in Barnes and Noble. Just wandering about, looking at a few books... and I spied a table, a table of books, as one finds in B&N. On one side of the table, the side I saw first, there were memoirs about horribleness... several on cutting, "Prozac Nation", "Wasted" (a really gripping memoir that I read earlier about a girl/young woman with HORRIBLE anorexia and bullima, it's really, really intense), one about OCD, etc, etc. On the other side of the table? "A Younger woman by next year," "The G. I. Diet," "50 ways to make your marriage work," "3 little black skirts, all you need to know.. etc," various slimming and beauty books. WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!

Joy (9/28/2006 9:21:10 PM): There's some really good stuff in here, about the ways self-confidence promotes health and self-disapproval undermines health.

There’s a saying old, says that love is blind
Still we’re often told, "seek and ye shall find"
So I’m going to seek a certain lad I’ve had in mind

Looking everywhere, haven’t found him yet
He’s the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret

I’d like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?

There’s a somebody I’m longin’ to see
I hope that he, turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me

I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood
I know I could, always be good
To one who’ll watch over me

Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key

Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

(bridge)

Won’t you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

Someone to watch over me
