The Da Vinci Code

CNN: Early viewers pan 'Da Vinci Code'

AICN: DA VINCI CODE's Online Blackout... DeCoded & The Film Is Dull???
... I was stonewalled and told that from the HIGHEST LEVELS of Authority at SONY - that INTERNET OUTLETS were forbidden to see the film until Thursday night... that print outlets were only allowed into those first two screenings.

Wow. Hadn't run into that policy since about 1999.

It's getting terrible reviews. Not surprising since I didn't think the book was all that good.

Looks like Hanks's star has fallen.

I wasn't planning to see the Da Vinci Code because I'm sick of seeing the name everywhere I go.

But this news about the bad reviews is making me feel a little sorry for the poor little mite, so I might actually see it after all.

I thought the book was good but it is not a master piece though. Too much hype ruins everything.

I'm sure it will do fine.

I'm not really palnning on seeing it either...too much hype; same reason I'll probebly never read the book; Although in time It seems like it will be required reading for Schools or something.

You know, Ron Howard was one of the few directors I would have trusted this material with. Damn it.

Howard is the only reason I'd watch it. I've enjoyed just about everything he's directed.

Saw it last night and thought it was quite good, though from the way people rave about the book I can't help feeling that it should have been better.

I saw this last night (I've never read the book so I didn't know the story except for a few details) and I thought the movie was excellent.

I really enjoyed it.

Now for the Book. :P

(So it's generally excellent if you haven't read the book?)

Heh, it would seem so, a friend - who has read it - hated it.

I've seen the movie when I was back home, a couple of weeks ago. Now, I read the book quite a bit of time ago, but I think the movie was pretty faithful - sure, a couple of subplots and such were cut out or simplified:
Spoiler
for example, there was romantic tension between Langdon and Sophie, and if I remember correctly Aringarosa was not acting for the Vatican, but by himself after hearing that the Pope would withdraw from the Opus Dei. Additionally, in the book it turned out that the man who had seen Sophie and Langdon entering the church of Roslyn was her brother, and that the curator of the Louvre (who was her true grandfather) had decided to split brother and sister after the death of their parents, fearing it had not been an accident, and had left for Paris, leaving behind his wife to take care of the boy.
However, the movie is faithful to the book, which was in itself hardly an action story, and far more of a "cultural" thriller. Hence the lengthy expositions of theories and legends, which fit the movie perfectly and are essential to the evolution of the story, even though they may seem boring or bothersome to those who are even just slightly more action-oriented.

Personally, I found it quite good. I like Tom Hanks as an actor, and Ron Howard as a director, and I think Bettany as Silas and McKellen as Teabing were very good too. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, and as those of you who visit the Close know, I'm a Christian (or quasi-Christian :P), and I can assure I didn't feel threatened in the least by the movie or the theories it exposes... it saddens me to think of all the fuss that was made over it.
