The FIFA rankings put England as the 10th best team in the world. They tend to be a bit weird (USA are 5th), but they are definitive, unfortunately.

I think Rooney blew it for us personally. I finally saw where Sven was going with this system in the Portugal game, and from that perspective it was working well. The defence was so solid that we had them in our pockets the whole time and they were reduced to taking pot shots from range. In the 5 minutes or so before the sending off, Portugal were getting frustrated and ragged at the back and I honestly think we'd have scored a couple by the end. I also think it was a tactic that could've allowed us to overcome 'superior' opposition, but we'll never know.

As for Ronaldo, he's an incredibly arrogant man. If he wasn't, he couldn't play the way that he does. I think his appeal to the referee wasn't exactly nice, but it wasn't necessary either (only Rooney could be hotheaded enough to stamp on a player with the referee six feet away, looking straight at him) and scoring the killer penalty was just the sort of thing he'll thrive from, as will be the short-lived abuse he'll get when the season restarts.

The rankings are based of percentage wins i think. And seen as USA play fairely poor teams from their area thats why their win record is so good.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.

Germany 0 - 2 Italy.

What a game - end to end stuff and 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of extra time.
Definately the best game of the tournament so far.

Can't wait for the France v Portugal game tomorrow night.

France should win, then I'd hope they win the Final as well.

Only caught the extra time of the Germany - italy game, 2 great goals to finish.

Well we have the Final, Italy V France. France won 1-0 against Portugal, a Zidane Penalty. We also have the Loser Final between Germany and Portugal. After tonight, it shows how stupid Portugal are. The things they tired to do, diving n stuff. C Ronaldo was an idiot with the amount of times he dived. It is not just England who hate C Ronaldo, sounds like the French and the Germans don't like him. He got so many boos.

Germany fish 3rd place... if that means anything. They beat Portugal 3-1. C Ronaldo said he wants to leave Man U because he can't stay at Manchester. I think he knew that he did something wrong(not that I think much of it) and is looking for a way out. Real Madrid most likely. Oh well, go from one club that don't win anything, to another club that don't win anything.

Well it is all over and Italy have won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It was 1-1 at Half-Time, Zidane scored a penalty and then Materazzi scores. It goes to Extra Time where Zidane was sent-off for a head butt on Materazzi. It went to penalties and Italy win 5-3. Well done Italy.

I hadn't been following the World Cup too much (not since 1994 anyway), but I happened to catch the penalty shootout just as it was starting. Exciting to watch, but it always seems unfair to have a contest of skill reduced to being decided by random luck. Oh, well, too bad for France. Congrats to Italy!

A big cheer to Xar! He's the only Italian Watcher I'm aware of (sorry if I missed anyone else). Don't know if he follows soccer, but cheers anyway... :)

One of the World Cup officials was our very own from Winnipeg. I've heard there were grumblings about the officiating, but our man's crew was apparently one of the more competent ones out there. Don't know if he was in the final game, though. I'm sure I'll pester him the next time I see him (we both work in the same building). :)

W00T! :bwave: :nanaparty: :letsparty:

It took us 24 years but we got it back :D Thanks for the cheer, MM... I don't usually visit this forum, but today I felt I had to :D I'm not normally a soccer fan, but when your national team is playing the final, you have to watch that!

As it happens, I watched it in my student dorm bar, with several dozen other people, none of whom were French, but all of whom rooted for France... I felt a little uneasy being the only one clapping hands at the end of the game, but who cares? Most Germans here rooted for France because Italy had defeated them... I'm starting to think that whoever the Germans favor, loses :P

Well done to Italy, although they did beat us on a pathetic choice. :P

EDIT: Doesn't seem to be working. :hmm:
