55 Word Story

Post by I'm Murrin »

What happened to this thread? I needed to get the juices flowing, so I decided to do a little flash, look for the thread in here... and it's gone! So I'm starting it up again (if the mods don't have any particular reasons for me not to?).

The aim is to write a story in 55 words or less - a few more is fine, but getting it short and sweet is more of a challenge.

------

By afternoon it had reached halfway up my chest. I could almost see it moving, creeping inexorably upward. I could no longer move my arms.
At sunset it began to enter my mouth, soft grey matter - so much like fungus - creeping down into my throat, suffocating; infiltrating.
At midnight it got up and walked away.

(Okay, seems there's no interest in this. I'll keep posting some when I feel the urge.)

The dark-clad figure slips silently between shadows, through trees and bushes, over walls and onto a roof. He runs in a complete absence of sound, and reaches a shuttered window. Carefully, he takes out his tools, unbars the glass and enters the chamber beyond. Seconds later, death delivered, he slips back into the night.

There's interest from me, I just seem unable to do it.

The moment it left my mouth, I knew I had gone too far. The look on her pained face was enough to realize my mistake. No words can undo what was just done. My actions have impaled me to my consequences. My tears began to fall, undaunted by attempts to stem the flow. What have I done. . .
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
He traded magic for fact, no trade backs. . .

Never say never. We sat and we talked, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, what I thought could never occur, did. I saw the sun shine on her face, and I knew my faith in the world was renewed. This was what the poets were talking about.

He sat at his computer, wondering how he could possibly write a story in fifty-five words or less. Taking a deep breath, he determined he would not fail the challenge. He thought for a moment, silent, and then began to type. Before he knew it, the story was done.

The gray statue had stood long, enduring the elements and the brutality of war for hundreds of years. Sad, stone eyes regarded the world, reflecting on the brevity of human lives. Suddenly a shape, a red and blue blur, hurtled toward it. Destroyed, the last thing the statue saw was a laughing Superman flying away.

Little Eddie woke up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty. He walked down to the kitchen and drank a glass of water. When he got back to his bed, he excitedly looked under his pillow. She had come! His tooth was gone, and a shiney silver dollar lay in its place.

After all these years, Sam decided to come out of the closet. He didn't know what his family would think, but it was simply something he had to do. Mustering his courage, he put his hand on the doorknob, opened the door, and stepped out of the closet.

"I, too am Brother, Brother", said Brother. "Oh? Where did you study, Brother?", said Brother. "Study?", said Brother, "Why, Earth". Brother's eyes shifted downward, past his nose, "Oh, I see". Brother said, coolly "Vanity? Does Brother not know this is a Sin? Do not mock me, Brother, for you mock yourself, and so mock the Father."

"...you". Finally, another article finished. I open my email and prepare to send it out. A new e-mail arrives. "New Article topics"

Sighing, I reach for my mouse. A click letter and I see the list... at the very top are these words

"Irritable bowel syndrome"

Bloody Hell
And I swear
I'll never do it again
Unless you kinda liked it...

He was desperate for sweet, precious air -- frenziedly pulling himself closer to the water's surface. He had to be getting closer, he thought, nearly retching again from the fire of need in his lungs. As the first staticky spangles of unconsciousness bloomed in his vision and he realized his fate, his groping slowed and his mouth opened in crystallized horror.

Feeling confused, I didn't know what they expected from me. I could feel eyes; watching, waiting. All I could do was sit, stare at my hands and wish it all away. When one of them touched my face with it's long finger, I looked up. They understood my lack, they sent me home.

Power surged. The dials showed it was just enough to push things over the threshold. The flash was dazzling but not bright enough by half. We all stood in awe, our jaws slack, eyes wide. Then the shockwave hit. I remember waking, buried up to my neck in pulverized brick and mortar, screaming for death.

A thump. A tear. My heart lies before me, thudding out its last beat on the table. A hand, grasping, stroking. Cold comfort.
I watch the blood pool around my heart as it lies there unwanted, broken.
You do not see it. Your hand withdraws; blind, you speak your words.
I knew you would understand.
