Heh, sorry. I am usually not here on the weekends, and the mice will play, you know. I'm glad to hear about your playing experiance/gear....is that ASAT a classic, or a standard?
Just got home from rehearsal studio...I'm buggered! I've played that thing two or three times a week for nearly 15 months and never actually noticed it had a name let alone what it was! I think I'm more likely to be consigned to the Watson pile than the Holmes pile for basic observation.

Correction: now just the keyboard, guitar, and bongo. Guitar with one string now has zero strings.

Got my eyes on a red '57 reissue Strat with EMGs.....Basically a clone of the guitar Dave Gilmour plays.

Last time I saw him, he was playing a beat up Tele....though that red Strat does sound nice.

That Tele is awesome. It's on the cover of About Face, and it's the guitar he uses on Run Like Hell.

The kicker is that I had a red '57 reissue in the late '80s and sold it in the mid '90s.

Heh, there's a bass I sold in '01 on ebay right now; the guy I sold it to moved up to Chicago and sold it to the Chicago Music Exchange earlier this year. I'd love to have it back, but there's no way I could afford it nowadays.....

Anyway, the silver lining here is I failed to take detailed pics of it when I had it, but now thanks to this auction, I have some.

Very nice dAN. I've decided I'll never sell another guitar again, no matter what. I unloaded a 30th anniversary Les Paul with a ton of custom electronics in '97 for way less than it was worth. I sold a Strat-head San Dimas Charvel for $500 in 1987, now it'd be worth $2500+. I haven't touched my 12-string in nearly a year, but no way it leaves my posession.

Its the Classic, thought I'd said earlier.

Of late not getting to play it so much as set has changed and the owner is using his strat a lot less as he's worried about dragging it around due to it being worth a quid or two (its an original 1967 I think).

As a result am looking for another guitar. So far looked at a low end Gibson SG, a cheapo Gibson Les Paul (special) and a Fender (MIM) Tele which was chipped in shipping and is going real cheap.

Anyone got anything to say on any of these or other suggestions...bear in mind this is a second/spare and guitars are a damned sight more expensive in Australia!

OK so trialed the SG....love the sound but the 'feel' does not suit me, the bridge is a bit high and can only adjust so far with a back sloping neck. So had a tinker with a Les Paul....oh shit!

When I played sort of pro many, many years ago, I played one and thought it was heavy, and basically shit to play: a real monster! But I tried one the other day and wow! Before I was playing predominantly rhythm guitar now I'm playing lead and I see a whole universe of difference.

I now have the quandry of a new Les Paul Standard or a second hand custom. (yes the budget has got considerably bigger as "want" has overtaken "need"). The new ones are around A$3,750 and the second hand at about A$3,500. The condition of the custom is used but OK, the finish black, with ebony fingerboard and gold: but I have yet to play it thru' a decent amp and have some reservations about the sustain, tho' the action is sweet enough.. Its a 2000, pre custom shop model and is a US import with serial number but no papers, anyone have any ideas if this is a reasonable beast?

I think (and feel) that I like the play (tho' need to further expolore the sound) and like the black on black look. I do have a mate who's a Gibson rep but he now runs a guitar shop and I think the ask to recommend a competitors product will be an ask for him! The best of the new Standards is "amber" with a lovely maple grain not quite 'tiger' but damn close.

I guess there is a greater risk with a second hand guitar and so am looking to get some idea of the pedigree of a second hand, year 2000 Custom Les Paul compared relatively, to a brand new Standard Les Paul for about the same money......this should not vary according to currency.

All advice gratefully considered.

Don't worry about what year it is or where it's from. It's all about the sound. I've got a Custom, and I love it. It actually sounds better than my old 30th Anniversary sounded.

Cail, I agree. I think emotionally I am inclined to the Custom but want to hear it through something reasonable to determine the sound properly, the folks selling the Standard are giving me top amplification to make it sound great, I need to compare like with like.

I think tho' that I am looking to justify logically what my heart is telling me!

Anyway appreciate your input, thanks.

Dandelion, if I decide I need drums, will let you know. :)
