Washington, Aug 29: Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour's solo on their track ‘Comfortably Numb’ has been voted the greatest of all time.

It was chosen ahead of the opening riff from Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses in a poll by viewers of TV music channel Planet Rock. The US act, with Brit-born guitarist Slash, also took the number five with ‘November Rain’ and 17 with ‘Paradise City’.

Third on the list was "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, while "Eruption" by Van Halen was fourth and Led Zeppelin classic "Stairway to Heaven" came in the sixth place.

The rest of the top 10 featured ‘Sultans of Swing’ by Dire Straits, ‘Aqualung’ by Jethro Tull, ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles and ‘Child In Time’ by Deep Purple, reports the Mirror.

The top 20:

1 Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb.
2 Guns 'n' Roses, Sweet Child O' Mine.
3 Lynyrd Skynyrd, Freebird.
4 Van Halen, Eruption.
5 Guns 'n' Roses, November Rain.
6 Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven.
7 Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing.
8 Jethro Tull, Aqualung.
9 Eagles, Hotel California.
10 Deep Purple, Child in Time.
11 Queen, Brighton Rock.
12 Jimi Hendrix, All Along the Watch Tower.
13 Deep Purple, Highway Star.
14 Wishbone Ash, Throw Down the Sword.
15 Ozzy Osbourne, No More Tears.
16 Cream, Crossroads.
17 Guns 'n' Roses, Paradise City.
18 Led Zeppelin, Since I've Been Loving You.

I'm glad "Comfortably Numb" is number one. I remember Gilmour was placed obscenely low on RS's 100 Greatest Guitarists list (80-something, if I recall correctly).

Hard to argue with the twin solos in 'Comfortably Numb'. They're certainly Dave's best, but I think I'd put Page's 'Since I've Been Lovin' You' at the top of the heap.

Once again, Rush, King Crimson and Yes get screwed! (though I do like most of those songs)
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
