As it turns out, SRD can justifiably call Cov 9 either. It is "shall pass utterly" in Atiaran's telling of The Legend of Berek Halfhand, and "should pass utterly" in Lord Kevin's Lament.

And disregards the rest

Re: Gradual Interview Lena rape explanation. I'm glad we've sorted that one out ( ;) ). You were clearly more "on the ball" than I was Wayfriend. What Aliantha wrote the other day struck a chord with me, but it seems kind of useless debating this given we have the answer from SRD. That said, I would happily argue with SRD over some of the things that he has said because I don't necessarily agree. And I think, to a certain degree, he actually takes away the humanity of Lena by saying what he said. To a certain degree, I believe his viewpoint to be very masculine.

^^^ Way, I think SRD has said before that he doesn't answer the questions like a queue. It's more random. "Spray and pray" he says, heh.

And I'm still REALLY bothered by "Should Pass Utterly". I say we start a protest! Bring back Shall! Bring back Shall! Bring back Shall!   -jay

Why are you bothered? Do you fear that the title brings about something more depressing than say..."the LAST DARK"? What could be worse?

I'm just bothered by the fact that he snuck the change in like it's been called that the entire time, and that we'd never notice.

Oh yeah, we noticed, Big Dog! Don't try to hide it! Bring back Shall! Bring back Shall!

Yeah, Jay. How about something like this.

Dear Mr Donaldson:

We the below signed believe that the third novel of The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant should be renamed "Shall Pass Utterly" regardless of whether you think "Should Pass Utterly" is more apt or not. We are your fans. Your number one concern should be to please us.

Oh, and by the way, while you're at it, can you get rid of Linden Avery (as we don't particularly like her either).

Yours sincerely

Yeah, that should do it! ;)

Pah! I poop in the general path of your Linden haters! ;)
It is so refreshing to have a character like this in literature!

...now let's talk about some REALLY annoyong characters .. like half the ones in RR Martings books....

Donaldson has a very peculiar view. Even though he wrote that Lena was immobilized by the horror of the act, he then claims that that was her "choice" to respond that way.

Frankly, I cannot swallow that myself; perhaps the word 'choice' means something different to him than to me (and I presume you, and others).

How does one, frozen by horror, choose to be so frozen?

BTW, my post above - JUST KIDDING!!

I would NOT represent myself as the Watch to SRD!

JAY SHOULD!! (SHALL ;) )

That would be his FIRST question to SRD!! [Ok, it's more of a demand, but still!!]

If not "Shall Pass Utterly", and folks don't like "Should...", then how about some other Title ideas for Chron 9:

Will Pass Utterly
Is Passing Utterly
To Pass Utterly, and Then Some
Gunna Pass Utterly
Surely Will Pass Utterly (and don't call me Shirley)
Utterly, to Pass, it Shall, Yes
Will Not Pass Utterly...Psyche!
To Pass Utterly or Not to Pass Utterly
The End of All Things (Until The Last Dark)
It Looks Linden Destroys The Land Until Thomas Saves It Right At The End, Damn That Linden

Hmmm Just some ideas....

;)
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

I second the motion to "bring back shall"!

The Chonicles has been written in operatic and grandiose prose, and "shall pass utterly" continues that tradition much better than "should pass utterly".

Ahh...but that word changes a lot of things.
"Shall" Pass Utterly binds the story as being the end of the Land, even the Land's Earth.
But "Should" pass Uterly keeps us guessing, it's more of a question than a statement.
