I don't know how this movie got under my radar, but I have rectified that mistake. This movie is definately going on my top 5 sci-fi films list. Christian Bale, Emily Watson, others. I definately recommend this one if you liked Gattica... or The Matrix, I guess, though if you didn't like Gattica I wouldn't recommend it.
Fist, if you haven't seen this movie, then you especially gotta see this one. I never thought a gunfight could ever be described as beautiful, but... There is some amazing action sequences in this movie, but it's only secondary to the story/message.

emily Watson should be Queen by now after her performance in Breaking The Waves. Sadly, it didn't get the credit deserved and now she's just running around getting roles here and there, still being unbelievably talented but not being respected. I'd see this!

Hmm, Gattaca is one of my favourite films but I thought Equilibrium was so-so. I thought it was a very good idea, but ultimately poorly executed. The whole 'no emotions' thing only seemed to be apparent when it suited the plot. There was just too much emotion going on for the whole concept of Libria to be believable.
Perhaps if they'd used sucky soap-opera actors they might have pulled it off a bit better, or they could have put Lord Oaky-McPine himself, Hayden Christensen, as the lead character.

Well, there's a difference between being emotionless and being a bad actor (for an example, watch Enterprise 
). I think some of the abberant emotion was called for, but I can't really say why without spoiling. If anything, I'd chalk it up to some of the vestigial, unescapable human behaviour (I think along the lines of the "I'm sorry conversation"). I felt the message was a little heavy-handed at times, but such a blatant sci-fi story kind of has to be... unless you're ultra sneaky like the Wachowskis or Verhoeven.
