Yes, that's more like it.

And it's a big mindf*ck too.

So, I take it Dark Crystal doesn't count, since it's Fantasy?

Close Encounters doesn't seem to have been mentioned

I agree, 2001 is way over rated. I had never watched it, and finally picked up a VHS of it a few months back for $1.00. One of the slowest most boring SciFi flicks I've ever seen, IMHO (Unless it gets better after the first couple of hours, I didn't even bother finishing it)

Do Mad Max and The Road Warrior count?

2001 really doesn't get much better. Funny thing is, I really enjoyed the book.

Thought it was generally well done--liked the dark feel, the giant rabbit, execution of plot, etc., but it just didn't reward me after repeated viewings. The film can initially convince you that it's highly cerebral and philosophical, but I found it to be a paper-thin veneer more than anything. Hides its absence of intelligence behind confusing paradoxes.
Well said.

Oh man, it's disheartening to see all these negative opinions of 2001: A Space Odyssey. :(

So I will make myself happier and say proudly that it's not just my favorite sci-fi film, it's my favorite movie ever. :D

My all-time Top Ten hasn't changed much. Instead, want to mention four recent viewing favorites:

The Andromeda Strain - Finally bought the DVD after all these years of just catching it on late night TV. I love the clean visual style of the film, and Robert Wise's tight direction/editing. The 70's-era cutting edge computer/medical technology portrayed in the film may look quaint now, but the suspenseful story still works.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Yes, I watched it again. Yes, another Robert Wise film. Unlike the vast majority who think this is the most boring movie ever made (along with 2001), I absolute love ST:TMP and never tire of it. I get so much out of it every time I see it.

Blade Runner (newly remastered) - This recent DVD re-release at last does justice to BR in terms of picture quality. BR looks properly gorgeous now. Please, for the love of Rachel, discard that ugly pixelated impostor in your movie collection and get this DVD - the real thing. However, it sucks that there are still no bonus features.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Watched it again this summer and the sense of awe is still there. Not quite ready to call it my favorite Spielberg movie, as he's made so many that I love. But CE3K is pretty darn close to the top.

I've always been somewhat mystified by the lavish praise heaped upon Bladerunner. It works well as a noir detective film, but is a horrible, horrible interpretation of an excellent PK Dick story.

It's Ridley, so of course it looks good, but ultimately I think the film is mildly interesting eye candy.

Wow, that's pretty much how I see BR, too. Like it, but definitely don't love it. Ind I totally agree that ST 1 and 2001 are great remedies for insomnia. Wrath of Khan ans Empire Strikes Back are my favorite Sci-Fi flicks, along with Galaxy Quest, but I still think the best is yet to come, hopefully in the form of Asimov's Foundation.

here's a list I made back in '02 at the Hangar:

The Illustrated Man, Event Horizon, 2001, War of the Worlds (original), Time After Time, Pitch Black, Blade Runner, The Cube, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Dark City, The Matrix, The Dunwich Horror, Alien, They Live, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both versions), The Empire Strikes Back, Scanners, The Thirteenth Floor, The Lathe of Heaven, Starship Troopers, Dark Star, Donnie Darko, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Cell, Forbidden Planet, Rhodan, The Fifth Element, Johnny Mnuemonic, Silent Running, Screamers, Farenhiet 451, Leviathan, The Final Countdown, The Abyss even, er, Dune --I'm sure the list goes on and on.

and I don't care what anyone says I really liked Vanilla Sky, Strange Days, Virtual Reality and IMPOSTER!!!

hmmm. i really really like it a lot. i own it. but i'm a HUGE noir and hard-boiled detective fan so the film gets me on a couple of levels.

but i think, structurally, it's an "extraction" (if you will) FROM Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Scott basically extracted the detective story out of the larger, more layered and allegorical story. god...the book is amazing. i'll never forget reading it for the first time, which was AFTER i saw the film. i didn't know, when it came out, that it was an adaptation of anything as i had never read any PKD.
so i love Bladerunner on it's own for itself and then i love it better having read what it's based on.

but i'd REALLY LOVE to see a truer film adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep!!!!! 8O

speaking of PKD...did anybody like Minority Report? i liked it.

Liked it the first time I saw it, not so much the 2nd time, won't watch it again. just too many plot holes I can't ignore.

Danlo, you have excellent taste in movies.

Luci-I liked Minority Report, but I think I would've liked it better in the hands of a different director and a different star.

I too would love to see an actual adaptation of DADoES?

I don't know if I'm going to list my favorites or comment on the films that have been listed...I guess I'll do both.

2001 is terrific.
Really enjoyed 2010, under rated film in my opinion.
Blade Runner is spectacular. I didn't read the PKD book so I don't have the usual "the book is so much better than this piece of crap" attitude.
Star Trek the Motion Picture was great to watch in the theater the first time I saw it but upon repeated viewings and becoming more mature I agree that it does make me sleepy in some parts. The Wrath of Khan rules the Star Trek movie franchise.
Alien is pretty much flawless.
Aliens was a lot of fun.
Highlander rocked. All other films and tv shouldn't have happend. "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!" Nuff said.
Pitch Black is terrific.
Chronicles of Riddick made little sense.
I loved Jurassic Park.
War of the Worlds blew me away.
Aside from the cheap, plastic models used for the domed city Logan's Run has always been one of my favorites.
Liked IMPOSTOR more than Minority Report
I, Robot was great.
Liked Independence Day.
Nothing will replace Star Wars as my favorite single movie of all time. (I admit that Empire is the better picture but...)
Still enjoy the orginal Planet of the Apes to this day.
Matrix was spectacular. (second film was a little weak)
Loved Back to the Future (second film was a little weak)
Galaxy Quest is beyond description, especially to me as a long time Star Trek fan.
Terminator and T2 are two of my favorites. T3 wasn't too bad.
Thats it for now.
I'll probably come back and edit some of this when more films occur to me.

Galaxy Quest was a great movie, but again, I'd call it a comedy (or at least satire) before I'd call it sci-fi.

I liked Impostor better than Minority Report as well.
