those of you who think this is sci-fi, tell me why. what makes it sci-fi?

PS. one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies which i just remembered,

Back To the Future.
Its nice that some portions of the original Highlander has flash backs to ancient times but the film is set in present day (1985). I don't think of Highlander as fantasy. Thats my opinion. There's nothing wrong with anyone else have a differing opinion. Even though its dead wrong.

I like the Island a lot, but I suppose that's more fantasy than Sci-Fi too, on account of it having Scarlett Johansson in it.....

The Island was surprisingly good, and I'd call it sci-fi.

I agree. I enjoyed The Island very much. I can't believe I forgot to mention it before.

Though others did not, I did enjoy the X-Files movie. Of course I'm a die hard X-files fan so I would have liked just about anything Chris Carter turned out. Oh wait. The X-files is fantasy. My bad.

The X-Files movie was OK. I just expected more out of it.

I was tempted to mention The Island...but too many plotholes--if we can't list Minority Report, we can't list The Island.

I hate potholes too. I once had to replace a tire AND rim because I hit one!

I don't remember seeing any potholes in Minority Report. The roads of the near future appeared to be well paved. Sorry danlo. I simply can't agreee with your point of view.

That somebody was from the state's Children, Youth and Families Division and my (soon to be) daughter was returning from a visit with her disinterested, junkie birth-mother.

I liked War of the Worlds two summers ago. I also liked Independence Day too. Nothing like a fast happy tap dance on the grave of the world, is there?

But even if the sequel is sci-fi that doesn't mean suddenly the first movie is sci-fi.

The first movie isn't sci fi due to its lousy sequels, it is sci fi because it isn't anything else. Immortal beings gathering in 1985 New York to battle each other for the power to hear and understand the thoughts and voices of all humans wherever they may be sounds most like an episode of the Twilight Zone. My guess is that if all of the flash back scenes are removed from the film there would be no other way to view it. IMHO.

Because they're immortal and can suck the life energy doesn't make it sci-fi. It makes it fantasy. It's supernatural. Where is the scientific explanation for that?

Well these beings are "born" believing they are human but clearly are quite different but kindred in their own nature. The fact that the "race" of immortals all fight to the last man suggests that they all share a common "Life Force" perhaps mutant, maybe alien in origin. The Lifeforce they "suck" is simply the shared life energy condensing down with each passing victory until one immortal gains it all. The end product is the rather amazing abilities that come from "The Prize". The "Life force" energy entitiy may have traveled through space as part of a comet or meteor that might have struck the earth in ancient times and eventually found host in the form of newly born humans.
Of course this is all speculation on my part but you did request some kind of explanation to back up my opinion.
