The most charismatic character

Post by Alsem »

I don't know if the subject exist already, but I would like to know your feelings about characters of the series up until Runes of the Earth.

Who are those you find most captivating?
A kind of a top ten :D

For me in order:

Lord Mhoram
Thomas Covenant
Lord Foul
Bannor
Linden Avery
Foamfollower
The First of the Search
Brinn
Stave
Atiaran Trell's mate
My heart still possess a wondrous shining place
Where dwells love, immaculate to behold
And this treasure, more precious than gold
I fear to lose in Time and insidious solace

For me the list could stop at Mhoram, my fav character in fant fiction.

...But to make a list, then following Mhoram is:
Foam, TC, Vain, Bannor, Honnisgrave (sp), Hile Troy, Stave, Brinn/Cail, LA, Atiaran, Nom
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

Foamfollower
Covenant
Mhoram
Elena
Bannor
Hile Troy
Atiaran
Manethrall Rue (Winhome Gay)
Foul
The Old Beggar (from the very very start of LFB)

right so i know some of those characters play very small parts, but they intrigue me none the less....

Much as I love Mhoram, I think the answer to this question is Foamfollower. Not "best" character or "most powerful" character, but "charismatic". The whole point of the Giants in general, and Foamfollower specifically, is charisma.

Agree 100%.

Well, I didn't choose Rocksister as my user name for nothing. I pick the First of the Search, and right beside her is her husband, Pitchwife. The story of these two Giants is definitely the highlight of the entire TC storyline to me. They personify faith, fealty, strength, loyalty, love, friendship, compassion, extravagant sacrifice, and pretty much every desirable virtue that exists. It's so rare that a strong female character takes front and center in any body of fictional work, but I think the First does just that. I also chose an approximation of her description as my avatar. If I had any artistic talent to speak of, the First and Pitchwife would be most worthy subjects to portray. Great topic.......
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

If we can consider the Land a character that would be my vote. I don't know about "charismatic" but compelling would be Lord Foul & TC. Who would I give a hug to? Pitchwife...followed by Hamako (he was twice bereft for god's sake!), Mistweave, dukkha and Lord Hyrim.

The most charismatic? Definitely Elena (of the living mortals anyway). Her charisma score must be way high. I'm thinking around 18, but potentially it could be even more, as she must be high enough level to have gained at least one level-up stat increase. And then there's Lord Foul whose charisma must be in the clouds, based on the results of the intimidate checks he keeps getting, even with taking into account the bonuses from his divine rank and the skill ranks in things like bluff and intimidate he must have...

Oh, this appears not to be a D&D discussion...

Seriously, I would put both Lord Foul and Elena at the top, too.

Next would be The First of the Search and Pitchwife.

Then Mhoram.

Bannor.

Vain.

To my own surprise, the more I think about Foamfollower, the less I consider him to be a charismatic figure. He's even become faintly annoying in my mind. Yes, I know, that's blasphemy, and I await the flak to hit me. But I've said before that I find the Giants in the 2nd Chronicles much more interesting than in the 1st, and my feelings on that have not changed.

Alsem asks which character is the most charismatic, but he also asks who is the most "captivating." Not exactly the same thing. Well, in terms of Giants, I'd say Grimmand Honninsrave is the one who captivates me even more than the First or Pitchwife. Honninscrave is just so...grim for a Giant. A complicated, tortured soul. Gotta love him.

I agree with this, but we have to remember that the only Giants in the 1st Chronicles that we ever met were Foamfollower, Sparlimb Keelsetter, and the 3 Giant-ravers. Not much to work with there.

There's the word compelling again--Salty's pain is mezmerising in TPTP. In LFB he was, simply, an amazing character!

Top of the list easily: Mhoram.

Though he was a total berk, Hile Troy had charisma and presence.

I thought that the giants in the first chronicle were way more interesting than the second chronicles!
We see foamfollowers beginning as a great guy, then descent into violence after the woodhelvin battle, then later as a violence addict who is the last surviver of his race, then his redemption and finally contributing to saving the land and covenant with laughter.
The death of the unhomed has to be one of the best scenes ever!

Ahh, I can't articulate it, but they seem much more real and interesting than the search giants, who are so uncomplicated. Pitchwife and the first don't even have personal character crisises they have to overcome![/u]

Agreed. Much as everyone loves the Giants of the Second Chronicles, I consider Foamfollower vastly, vastly superior.

I agree, although I imagine that if one Giant suffered what the First, Pitchwife, Honniscrave and Seadreamer went through then they might equal Foamfollower.

As for the most charismatic characters, I'd say Mhoram, Hyrim, Elena and Foamfollower. Possibly Prothall as well, although I get the feeling that Covenant saw more of his potential than anyone else did.
You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.

He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

Hail, Rocksister!

So nice to see a fellow giant on here. We may be thin on the ground, but we more than make up for that in the other direction! ;) :D

Giants rock (scuse the pun!) and they are all so wonderfully articulate (with the obvious exception of Cable Seadreamer). And let's face it, without them the Chronicles would be perhaps overly dour. Charisma-wise, they're the champs.

I also found Elena very charismatic (but then I've long had a thing for messed up girls :) ), and of course Mhoram and Sunder.

But amongst the humans, I'm gonna go with Hyrim. He was like a little giant. :D
