My girlfriend's a big fan of Asimov etc too, but she just will not believe me about the Gap. :-x
Sounds like a short trip to "Dump GF Town" to me. ;)

Only so you can nab her. ;) She loves the classics, science fiction literature (not films/TV so much) and psychology. :P

Alas, you are right. But given that she knows my true identity - that of a drunken homeless man who lives in South Croyden and who has a badger named 'ponce' would I have any chance?

He swayed me into being homeless. No one resists Ponce the Badger. No one.

Hmm, Ponce the Badger sounds like an archaic English tradition. The annual poncing of the badger.

That was my impression, too. Even on rereads, it's the slowest part of the entire series. I assume you've made progress since this post, but if you haven't finished it yet, hang in there. Then end of Book 4 is definitely worth the time put into it.

2 & 3 were certainly the meat of the story and action. 5 is a fantastic finale. 4 is necessary to bridge the two. And it does have a few merits of its own.

Didn't Donaldson say somewhere that his personal life was a bit rocky during this period? Certainly the lack of sales on the previous books couldn't have helped. But wasn't his divorce during this time?

Actually, I just found the quote from the introduction to Reave the Just: "'The Woman Who Loved Pigs' helped me regain my balance whe I'd begun to founder in the Gap novels--specifically, between A Dark and Hungry God Arises and Chaos and Order."
