stopping gray messenger service ads

Post by duchess of malfi »

Messenger service ads are targeted to people who use late model windows, such as my computer which uses windows xp.
They are these gray boxes which constantly pop-up by themselves, and are usually for either porn or for software which will stop the ads.

I have found a supposed fix for them on AOL.

1. hit start button on your task bar
2. open the control panel
3. go to administrative tools (some XP users might have to go to performance and maintainence first, then administrative tools)
4. double click on services
5. scroll down to messenger
6. doubleclick messenger
7. change start-up type to "disabled"
8. click "stop" to stop the service

(edited for my usual bad spelling  )

Cool... but if my system starts going wonky, it'll be all your fault.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I've been getting those windows that won't close too! Except I don't have AOL... But I jsut go CTRL + ALT+ DELETE and close them. It's about time I figured out how.

Well, I haven't had any horrid gray ads since I did that to my computer yesterday -- can't say I miss the pesky things! :) And my computer still seems to be functioning well... :)

they are these little (sometimes not so little) gray boxes that pop up out of nowhere whenever you are on the internet -- they come through a security hole in later models of microsoft windows (like my windows xp). They are horrible -- like spam but worse because you can delete the spam in your mailbox without having to actually look at it...most of the gray boxes are either for software to stop them from happening or are for porn websites...
they come in somehow through something called windows messenger service...the instructions I found on AOL (which is good for all people, by the way, not just AOL users) tells you how to turn off windows messenger so the ads can't come through anymore
